i’m going to the beach tomorrow and wanted to do some fishing off the dock. i’ve never fished in saltwater before, so I’m not sure what kind of lures to get. i was looking for the ones that you throw out and immediately reel back in instead of the ones that just sit on the bottom and you just stand there holding the pole. i’m going to dicks later today, so if anyone knows what to get, I’d appreciate the help. we’ll be on the sound in Beufort if that makes a difference on what lure to get.

get a matte black steel leader, about 1 foot...attach a gotcha lure...you're in business for bluefish and spanish mack.

if you want to flounder fish, get a flounder rig with the bobber on it and you can cast and reel that back in SLOWLY...they tend to be lazy fish and won't chase food much. Make sure the squid is cut *neatly* and has no skin on it. They're picky.

Im not sure if the Spanish Mackeral are in yet, but the ideal lure for them are called Stingsilvers, or you can use a Hopkins lure. Steel leaders are good for Bluefish but a slightly heavier monofilament leader or even a fluorocarbon leader will result in more bites and spook the fish much less. To be honest,if you aren't really experienced, cut bait is is the most versatile bait and is going to catch you the most fish on a pier. Its also the easiest. Keep your chunks of bait small and bite sized (for fish not humans) and use relatively smaller hooks.

Please use circle hooks. Its frustrating seeing people tear fish all to shit trying to remove those barbs. Circle hooks work better anyway, and if you catch something you don't want to keep its ALOT easier to remove. Sizes 1/0 to 3/0 should work.

Gotchas are the best overall artificial bait in saltwater fishing by a mile in my opinion. You get fewer hits with the steel leader, far more hookups with a monofilament, but you'll get cut off and lose your lure as many more times.

A Gotcha should be cast and jerked repeatedly so that the lure jerks from side to side.

TIE YOUR OWN LEADER!!! Don't fuck with all the extra hardware and visibility of store-bought leaders. Purchase a pack of leader wire as suggested above, bronze works nearly as well it should be 10-20 lbs. stronger that you line test.

Have a pair of needle-nose pliers, this goes for all fishing.

To tie the leader; Tie a small barrel swivel rated for your line test to the end of you line (the Trilene, Rapala, or basic halh hitch are all good knots. (I use what I call a "stopper knot on all my rigs, even when trout fishing. This is simply one over-hand knot like the first thing you do to tie your shoes, at the very tip the the line. This helps prevent the line from slipping back through the main knot when the big one hits.) Cut the desired length of wire (alough a little extra, you can always cut that off.)

Loop the wire through the other end of the barrel swivel for about three inches. Pull the wire back to itself and catch it as together as possible with the pliers, but try not to kink the wire.

After you've looped the loose end throught the wire...

Lay the remaning couple of inches along to the line.

Grip the loop above the lure as closely as possible with the pliers gently.

Bend the few inches perpendicular to the main line. Begin wrapping them around the main wire as neatly as possible. 6 should be plenty. Cut off the excess wire.

Profit!

One note, I've caught as many fish in all waters from native trout streams to blue water on natural baits as I have on all artificial put together.

aren't the natural baits, like squid, the stuff that you put on a hook and let it sink to the bottom. the only problem with that is there's a lot of boats that come by, so leaving a line out there will be hard to do. that's why i'd prefer something to just cast out and reel in.

What ever you do, don't by fucking power pro line, I hate this shit and will never use it again. But like its been said, Gotchas are a go to and so are sting silvers but if you are just fishing of a dock, cut bait will do you best.

^ if he is concerned about boat traffic, then i would guess he isnt fishing on a fishing pier. In which case blues/spanish/etc are out of the question, and makes gotcha plugs and spoons pretty much useless. If you are fishing off a dock in the sound, go buy a pack of red jig heads and a pack of natural or new penny berkley gulps. Fish them slowly off the bottom, and if you can let the tide drag and bounce the lure along thats even better. Good for trout/drum/flounder.

i don't run steel leaders... caught too many cuda' i just run high strength mono or braided leaders...
i got sick of shooting fish.


i caught a couple hundred lbs of cobia last weekend in the gulf

I tied up some wire leader last night and a balloon to see if I could do some sharking last night but the wind made shit difficult.

spec rigs on the bottom with squid or shrimp or stingsilver lure..

i just got back from ocracoke and KILLED the trout with a stingsilver lure
