^If you are playing competitive golf you are walking and not drinking. You can drink and goof off playing basketball, does that mean it isn't a sport?

GOLF IS A SPORT. It takes more mental toughness than 99% of sports.

sport (spĂ´rt, sprt)
n.

1.
1. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
2. A particular form of this activity.
2. An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.

In my opinion it's one of the hardest sports....go out there and see if you can hit a perfect shot everytime, you can't do it, not even the best in the world can...Gary Player always said if he hit 6 or 7 perfect shots in a round he played his best

Also, try playing REAL golf : walking 18 holes in 95 degree heat with a 30 lb bag on your back, up and down hills. carts are for pussies

professional golfers don't carry their bags

does that make caddies professional athletes?

it's funny to see professional athletes like football players go out in one of those celebrity golf tournaments ( for example:charles barkley). These guys can be the best at what they do, but then look like they have no athletic ability when it comes to golf, cracks me up

Nope

just like in tennis you have ball bitches and in baseball you have ball boys and bat boys....it's the luxury of being a professional athlete

thanks for the sarcasm

I think you understand what i mean. I am pretty athletic. My best sport is golf, but i am pretty good at everything else. I can shoot a basketball well, i was good at baseball, i can play tennis, etc etc...i just think it's fun to watch pro football players and what not try to play golf, it's like they are kids or somehtin

most athletes are marginal at best at sports other than their own

your have no point

[Edited on June 23, 2006 at 1:19 AM. Reason : i'm not twisting anything, i'm just following your logic]

i'm pretty sure i watched those guys wiff it a few tiems in the long drive event...and if you ever watch the golf channel, they have skills challenges for pro sports teams...some of those guys are decent and a lot of them are hackers, but i know a lot of golfers suck at other sports...so this could go on forever

haha this is getting stupid, i'm out Ernie

ok here's the deal

golf is a "sport" in the purest sense of the word

so are darts, bowling, and free throw shooting

but these sports, sports without any form of defense or true opposition, are really just exhibitions of talents

that doesn't mean they are any less difficult or less of a "sport"

however, objective competitions, those with judges (gymnastics, ice skating, cheerleading, etc.) are not sports at all

take that shit to the bank

i would say golf has it's defenses...you have hazards, trees, rough, wind, rain, blah blah blah,

golf is mainly a mental sport, yes, but that is what makes it so difficult. I don't know what your expereince is in teh game or if you've ever played tournaments, but making a 3 foot putt with your buddies goofing around is nothing compared to what you go thru in a tournament. Just like Phil Mickelson last week, he freakin double bogied the last hole when he could par or birdie that thing every other day.

bowling has the gutter by the way, that's a defense

yeah i know its hard, i've played competitive golf

but hazards aren't what i'm talking about when i say defense

i mean there's not someone out there blocking your shots or trying to tackle you

no one can stop tiger from shooting a 62

yeah that was by far the most impressive thing i've ever seen on that show

i also learned that you can be a top nfl receiver simply by having blazing speed, decent hands, and no other athletic talents (re: chad johnson)

darts, free throw shooting require no real physical exertion. bowling requires slightly more but is still based more on how you throw then how hard.

golfer have to be physically extremely well fit and strong to hit the ball as far and straight as they do.

i used to be on your side until i actually played golf. golf uses every single muscle in your body. my entire body was physically sore the day after a few hours at the range.

of the four main components of athleticism, only agility doesnt really come into play

stamina is necessary to walk a full 18 holes 4 days in a row and hit at least 20 shots where you have to swing with all your power

strength is necessary to hit the ball farther

speed of the club is a component of that strength

and of course, not really an athetic talent, but coordination is very important (of course this is where you draw your darts/bowling comparison, but it is the only facet where there is comparison)

by your definition none of hte track and field events are sports and most of the winter olympics arent sports
