My HP laptop won't go into standby or hibernate. It is 2 years old, but this problem only seems to have started very recently, like a month or two ago.

I have tried 3 different methods to standby/hibernate:

1. Windows start menu
2. Specific keyboard keys
3. Unplugging AC power so it is running on batteries and setting power meter properties to standby/hibernate when running on batteries in a certain number of minutes

No matter which method I try, this is what happens: the computer does go into standby/hibernate but then immediately comes back on again as if woken up from standby/hibernate.

What could be the problem? The only way I can make it hibernate is let it run on batteries till they run down completely, even though in the power meter properties I have set it to standby after 5 min and hibernate after 10 min.

See if there's a BIOS setting that's preventing it from properly hibernating.

probably something accessing the hard drive causing it to wake. I usually find that the older an OS install gets, the less likely it'll go into standby so I usually just wipe it and re-install.

but, a good sweep of the spyware, uninstalling unnecissary services, etc might fix it. could also be a BIOS setting but BIOS doesn't just randomly change settings so if you didn't mess with it, it's probably not BIOS
