It's not like I want everything in my house to be black, stainless steel, brushed aluminum, and glass, but I do like that modern, industrial look (although I don't want my house to look like a factory). I won't be buying a house for another 1.5-2 years, and I'll only be staying there for a few years (although I'll prob keep the house and hire a property manager to rent it), but whenever I start buying nice furniture, I want to start accumulating the things I want for when I get to stay in one house for a while and set it up like I want.

you pretty much described it. modern industrial. or contemporary, as digital said. but the pool table, with the xs on it, and the metal desk have an industrial look. if you're trying to google, i'd do contemporary or industrial. contemporary is just the clean-lined look. industrial has pipe, metal, other influences.
i like a lot of that. glass is a bitch to keep up, but i like it. i like the booth/tables too. interesting. ] 6/25/2006 1:31:09 PM |

$15,750. hopefully someone else besides Brunswick makes a decent stainless pool table that I wouldn't have to sell an organ to afford. 6/25/2006 1:46:26 PM |

i never imagined that pool table would be so expensive. i can see the ones with ornate wordworking (the gothic style stuff especially) being really expensive, but i don't see what about that one commands such a huge price, other than the fact that it looks sweet. 6/25/2006 1:50:53 PM |

i don't see it. it was the first image that came up when i googled "stainless steel pool table"
but the fact that they make something less than $15000 is a positive start. might be better to find something in the US so shipping wouldn't be so bad. 6/25/2006 1:54:05 PM |

I realize everyone's tastes differ, but I can't stand to see people completely shut out the designs of long ago... please don't overlook the furniture from periods like American Empire, Directoire, or even Art Deco, whose simpler, classic lines can work very harmoniously with "contemporary" furniture. Antiques are a wonderful way to enhance your home with old elegance and a piece of design history... I have a wonderful American Empire mahogany chest of drawers from the 1830s, and a beautiful Art Moderne desk from around 1920. 6/30/2006 9:55:30 PM |

^^Yeah, I'm impressed by people who have the balls to and succeed at mixing styles. It's more difficult than just ordering a room out of a catologue, but the effect is more interesting.
And, I know everyone has said modern, contemporary, etc...I'd like to add minimalist...

Yea, to reiterate what has already been said.
The first batch of things you posted are modern industrial.
The reason that pool table is so expensive is because it's made of stainless steel. If it were anodized aluminum or painted/electroplated steel it would be MUCH cheaper.
Keep in mind, modern furnture that's worth a shit is EXPENSIVE.
Between Dwell, West Elm and Design Within Reach you can find pretty much anything style-wise you are looking for. From there it's just a matter of finding modern stores in your area. Too bad you aren't still around Raleigh, because I could hook you up with all kinds of places around here.

I don't think it's that most people "shut out designs of long ago", most well designed modern furniture is based on Scandanavian design that is as old or older than the periods you made mention of. It's just different taste. I hate most classic mainstream furniture because it was pretentiously ornate, frilly or just plain decorative.

I think that's silly frankly. I think it's impressive if someone is trying to put together an eclectic theme, but why would mix styles just to make it mixed? If you are trying to put together a modern room, then you would normally want everything in the same style and composition, in which case it would look better in the end to buy it as a suite.
And modern != minimalist. modern furniture can be minimal, and minimal furniture can be modern, but they aren't all-inclusive of one another. IKEA is hardly minimalist6/30/2006 11:20:53 PM |
raleighboy All American 929 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah, I don't really see the rationale behind mixing things solely for the sake of mixing things. The primary concern there should be that pieces complement each other through color, line, material, ornament, or some other aspect of design. My chinese-influenced cabinet looks perfect next to an art-deco console radio due to the closely-matched hues in the wood.
I don't view the highly-ornamented styles of old to be pretentious, they can be quite beautiful if they have a sense of formal balance about them... but I also can't totally divorce myself from the allure of the historical connotations that styles from the last 300 years carry with them, misguided as they may be, like romanticized nostalgia for the infancy of the United States, the antebellum Old South, or the splendid excesses of America's Gilded Age.
Regarding price, with brand new stuff you definitely pay out the ass for quality craftsmanship and design; a very fine bergere chair from the 1940s in the Sheraton style, on the other hand, can be had for maybe $300, compared to probably $900 or more for a comparable new-manufacture piece of equal quality.

well, i'm into the final phase of flight school, and i'll select my platform in a couple of months (or really have it assigned to me). if i get F-18s like I want, I'll go to SoCal for a year, then back to Beaufort, SC.
