"First the Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup. Now their home at the RBC Center could get a $15 million to $25 million facelift.

The Triangle Business Journal reports the upgrades would take place over a six year to seven year period and include a new sound system and jumbotron.

A brand-new private club and restaurant will also be built.

The club is a top priority and it could be ready by the time the first puck drops this fall."

Pretty good news here for our basketball program. This will set our facilities above and beyond

aren't we scheduled to host some first and second round games again like we did a few years ago.

Maybe this will help us to move up and get a regional site

^I bet thats what they're going for, extra money for packing the house with fans for the regional NCAA tourney games

since the RBC center probably wont be selling a lot of tickets for State games for a couple years

they are building a mirror image of the existing ledge bar and restaurant on the opposite side of the arena. the new restaurant will be a little more upscale than the buffet they have currently.

I will guarantee that our ticket sales will not drop over the next two years. More people will come watch NC State basketball just because we're not coached by herb sendek. Even if we suck, our games will be more fun to go to.

This probably isn't the thread for this discussion, but I personally don't see how you can begin to make these type of statements. What basis do you have for saying we aren't going to be the worst? For starters, maybe a few esoterics have claimed we'll be in the basement, but overall, not many rational people (or slightly irrational that are on this board) have made these type of statements.

Your comment was in reply to this (it seems)

and here is a news flash, in the past couple years, we didn't exactly sell the house out for games other than Duke/UNC/UMD/Wake. That's a small portion of our schedule, and it's pretty sad we didn't sell out every ACC game.

"taxpayer money???"

the taxpayers being people who come here from elsewhere and stay in hotels, not you and me

also, facelift is not the appropriate word here - more like addition and maintenance. that makes more sense.

but still, the arena is pretty well off as is, comparatively, and the money could certainly be used for other things.

Lets keep it that way. General fund money should not go to projects like this.

I think it's just a like...dining club or something like that...not a "nightclub" persay but something akin to a frequent flyer members club or something. A place where rich people can go smoke, drink and eat overpriced food with other rich people.

here is a news flash for you . . . seats not being full is not equal to not selling out. There have been a lot of games that were "sold out," but had empty seats.

"Nearly seven (m) million dollars will be spent on the R-B-C Center in Raleigh over the next two years. The improvements include replacing the sound system in the lower seating area, adding concession equipment and installing credit card machines at concession stands.

The improvements will be paid for by the Centennial Authority.

The money comes from reserves set aside each year from profits for maintenance and repairs. The fund was not supposed to be used until 2009, but the Centennial Authority got permission from the city of Raleigh and Wake County commissioners to spend three (m) million dollars this year and three-point-seven (m) million dollars next year."
