Can someone explain the strategy on that play, trying to steal home?

If you do it with 2 strikes (and 2 outs), doesn't the batter HAVE to take the pitch? I mean, if he makes contact and gets out at first, inning is over anyway. If he gets a hit, the guy would have scored anyway.
Not sure why the announcers have not mentioned that the batter made a huge error. Not by swinging a at a bad pitch...by swinging at any pitch. Or, did batter not get the steal sign? Huge error somewhere in there.
Should have tried it with 1 strike.
