Ok pet people,
I want to buy a pygmy hedgehog or a short-tailed possum, but live animal shipping from a dealer on the web is rediculously expensive.
Are there any local or nearby exotic pet stores that might carry these little critters? 6/27/2006 5:12:53 PM |

I think it's illegal to sell hedgehogs in NC now. That's just what I heard, so I could be wrong, but a pet store was selling a cage setup and you just happen to get a hedgehog for "free" with it. 6/27/2006 6:18:02 PM |

There's an exotic pet shop near Carolina Place Mall in Pineville that sells lots of weird stuff like sugargliders, gators, albino pythons, etc. I'd give them a shout and see what they could do for you. 6/27/2006 10:38:43 PM |

There's a little place in Univershitty Mall in Chapel Hill (off of 15-501) called Dubie's Pet World...they sell about the most exotic stuff I've seen around.... I like to tease the Macaw they have. 6/28/2006 1:29:45 AM |

It's not illegal to sell hedgehogs in NC...You have to have a USDA permit to breed/sell hedgehogs legally. You have to get inspected by the USDA in order to get the "okay".
A lot of the time, pet stores who sell hedgehogs have no idea what they need as far as food, caging and exercise goes.
Hedgehogs and possums are completely different animals. I seriously suggest you do a ton of further research before thinking about investing in one of these animals. BTW there's a hedgehog rescue in Boone... they might have some hogs available for adoption! 6/28/2006 6:33:45 PM |

There was some girl on TWW who used to sell hedgehogs like they were going out of style. Every damn week she had fifty more babies. I think she was crossbreeding them with guppies and rabbits to make more.
My dream animal is a skunk, but the dumbass laws in NC won't let me get one. Hopefully in the next ten years the rabies vaccine that is being tested will get approved and they will make them legal. 6/28/2006 7:44:37 PM |

If Fish World still buys from Royal Pet Supplies then they can order hedgehogs. At least we could when I was the manager there. Might want to go buy and ask them, they might think you are crazy at first but just ask if they buy from Royal. 6/28/2006 8:19:10 PM |

Yeah I hate that part of my new job (wildlife pest control/management). If we catch any raccoons or skunks, they have to be put down due to NC law. I'm sure my bosses would be happy to try relocation (although raccoons are like cats and could get back to the original home if it wanted) if that wasn't the law, because they loooooove raccoons. I don't know how they can do this profession.7/2/2006 6:20:56 PM |

raccoons are dangerous motherfuckers, though. they are fast as hell and can take out a full grown human or any dog in a flash. they'll climb all the way up your body and have a go at your face before you can say anything.
i know a woman who rehabs them (she also has skunks and other stuff) and by law she is the only person allowed to touch it. 7/3/2006 4:16:17 AM |

^Yeah, I know someone who works with them. They just roam her house, but if someone comes over she makes sure you're nowhere near them. We're allowed to play with the wolf though.
