Coming home on leave in a couple of weeks and looking for suggestions for fishing out in the Gulf Stream off the NC coast. Never been before and would appreciate any advice / warnings / suggestions. 7/3/2006 10:02:35 AM |

Are you looking for a recommended charter or what? A little more information would be helpful.
Warning: Since it's your first time, realize that you might get seasick. There is almost no way to know whether or not you will besides trying it, and about 50% do get seasick it seems like. You might want to try a shorter trip the first time to see if you get sick, so you don't spend 12 hours and $$$ being sick.
Suggestions: If possible go on a charter rather than a headboat. Headboats are about half the cost, but you'll catch far less fish and have much less fun doing it. Personal boat/Friends boat>Charter>Headboat.
Advice: Keep your lines wet. 7/3/2006 10:37:25 AM |

Charter is the way I'm leaning right now, so yeah recommendations for that would be good. I'm looking to find out anything someone wish they'd known / thought about before they went themselves, from who they recommend to practical tips. For example, motion sickness has never been an issue for me, but I won't be the only first timer, and I've never spent 12 hours on open water.
I'm out for the night, but I'll check back in the morning.

^^motion sickness was never a problem for me either til i went deep sea fishing and felt sick as a dog about 30 minutes into the trip...just be aware that because its never been a problem before doesn't mean you're immune 7/3/2006 12:41:11 PM |

Oregon Inlet or Hatteras is your best bet. But it is expensive around $1600 unless you do a make up and you go by yourself and just pay your share plus tip.
Out of OI, the Rebait is of the best boats I've been on. Capt Baum is awesome and knows how to fish and really lets you learn alot. 7/3/2006 1:32:18 PM |

If you want to do it for cheap, go on some of the fishing forums and find someone who needs a ho for the weekend, just help pay for gas and bait. 7/3/2006 4:18:30 PM |

Plenty if you the know the right spots (of course). You'll need to go about 40 miles off shore to a depth around 100ft (IIRC). Find the right spot and you'll hook one as soon as the rig gets to the bottom.
