Philip Morris began a test market today in Indianapolis for Taboka, a smoke-free, spit-free tobacco pouch that is tucked in the cheek. I have been waiting for weeks while all the information was confidential but now that we are selling it in stores, it is becoming a hot topic for the news and media. Indy recently made almost all public places smoke-free so the new products are finding their way into the marketplace.
Here is a short article about Taboka and others. Note: there is some misinformation. Taboka is not intended to be used as an aid to quitting (visit pmusa.com for help quitting) and it is also tucked in the cheek, not behind or under the lip.

how would this mitigate any of the negative effects of tobacco use other than relocating the carcinogens?

Quote : | "While it doesn't deliver quite as much nicotine as a cigarette, in the long run, smokeless tobacco appears to be just as addictive as cigarettes and can be just as hard to quit.
However, a lot of people in Sweden have used smokeless tobacco — they call it snus — to help then stop smoking, studies show. First-time tobacco users, especially young people, who start with smokeless tobacco usually don't end up smoking. If they already smoke, they're more likely to quit with the help of smokeless pouches.
Medical experts say that although there are certain risks associated with smokeless tobacco use, the smokeless option is far safer than smoking.
"This is the crux of misinformation. Mouth cancer risks are decidedly lower for smokeless tobacco than risks for smoking," said Brad Rodu, who has been an oral pathologist for 30 years and is now a professor of medicine at the University of Louisville Cancer Center in Kentucky. He runs a Web site in support of using smokeless tobacco as a way to help smokers stop smoking cigarettes.
Foulds agreed, adding that smokeless tobacco was about 90 percent less harmful than cigarettes.

No second-hand smoke....no risk of burning your house down with a cigarette butt.
I tried the pouch.
^Exactly. It is not a safe alternative to smoking but it is a new way to enjoy tobacco. Since it is smoke-free and spit-free, it can be enjoyed almost anywhere, anytime. PM is not marketing it as a safe-alternative and do not sample but it is a brand new product that is starting to gether attention. Smokeless tobacco alternatives to smoking are popular in Europe. Camel bought a factory in Sweden to develope it's Snus product.

This isn't the days of old where people were lured into trying tobacco products with lies and then they were addicted and learned they are dangerous.
The main thing I wanted to point out is that there is a new product out for adult tobacco consumers and this ABC news article has some misinformation about the placement of the Tobako Tobaccopak pouch. 7/10/2006 2:55:36 PM |

I'm not advertising so I wouldn't need the link to the ad page, but thank you This ia brand new thing and something people are interested in. Plus, it is only avaliable in Indiana so many wolfwebbers wouldn't even have access to it. I also included information about the other smokeless tobacco pouch by Camel so this thread is purely informational.

Now admittedly my knowledge of medicine is limited, but I should think that this would be at least marginally safer than delicious, delicious cigarettes.
With nothing going into the lungs, wouldn't lung cancer and emphysema be cut back a lot? Sure, the potential for heart trouble isn't going anywhere, but something's better than nothing.
Someone who knows more explain why I am wrong. 7/10/2006 3:36:57 PM |

this would've come in handy back when i was a minor...i wouldn't have had to do the 5 min prep before walking in the house--anti bacterial soap from bath n body works, check...gum or mint, check...febreeze car, check...

That's the main difference.
And yeah, smoking is bad and tobacco products are bad. No cigarette company denies that but there are still people who choose to use it and this new product is going to be in the news, positively and negatively. TWW brings you the information first.

they should make this smokeless/spitless tobacco into lollipops.
for fun and profit.
...
practically NO ONE in Seattle smokes. everyone is into biking, rollerblading, kayaking, skiiing.... everyone looks fit and healthy... its really amazing.
when we had our Fourth of July Fireworks at our neighborhood park, i saw lots of people smoking for the first time in a long time. I realized they were all the rednecks from the suburbs and outlying rural areas who had come into town to see the fireworks.
realized also they all looked fat and stupid, much like people generally did when i was in North Carolina.
I'm glad they dont live in the city. and it underscores why ill never live in the suburbs again if i can help it. 7/12/2006 1:58:09 AM |
