http://www.washingtonpost.com/blackmen

This is an ongoing series in the Washington Post. I think it has some good stuff to discuss. Here's some interesting stories and discussion transcripts:

"At the Corner of Progress and Peril"
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/01/AR2006060102184.html
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2006/06/01/DI2006060101171.html
The initial column that started the series and its discussion.

"Poll Reveals a Contradictory Portrait Shaded With Promise and Doubt"
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/03/AR2006060300695.html
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2006/06/02/DI2006060201012.html
An analysis and discussion of a nationwide poll amongst all people concerning black men.

"For the Love Of Ballou"
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/22/AR2006062201657.html
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2006/06/22/DI2006062200696.html
Two black high school seniors who are valedictorian and salutatorians of their high school.

A discussion about interracial relationship
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2006/06/08/DI2006060800820.html

The discussion transcripts raise some interesting comments and objections about the study and its articles, so they're worth reading too.

Why didn't somebody alert the Washington Post that the concept of race is meaningless?

Where's joe_schmoe when you need him?

Prawn Star, race is a social construct but that doesn't make it meaningless.

The one about "black men in interracial relationships" is superficial. Not interesting at all.

"Thompson was among the majority of black men in the poll who said the group's problems stem from its own failures. Black men were more likely than whites to express such sentiments. And while such negative views were held across the board, better-educated, affluent black men are most likely to criticize black men for not taking education seriously enough."

This is one of the more interesting points - Black men were more likely to say that we are responcible for our problems than whites are.

It could be that whites fell uncomfortable telling polster that they think black men are responsible for their problems but research shows that these types of responses are limited. People are suprisingly honest in polls.

I think the polls are anonymous anyway, and with no one standing over their shoulders, people could speak their minds without fear.
