step 1 - find dvr software
step 2 - do it
step 3 - open in movie maker or a better editor

So Windows XOP Media Center isn't a good enough DVR program or what??

Windows Media Center files (dvr-ms) are a pain in the rear to edit. I don't think you can edit them directly in Movie Maker (or even in Adobe Premier Elements.)
