Gas won't be 50 cent/gallon. Why? It's hard to get oil from a radioactive wasteland.

It's all tragic. Lebanon was once, "The Sweden of the Middle East" - the most diverse and moderate of all the Middle Eastern Countries. In biblical times they were known for their trees - "the ceders of Lebanon". Now they've been taken over by extremists.

First it was the tragic Druz / Christian civil war that tore the country apart. Now the Hezbollah is undermining central government positions.

It sucks. I do not believe that Israel can start negotiating prisoner releases or the kidnapings will escalate.

It has come to the warped point were Hezbollah celebrates getting Israel so mad they are willing to bomb Lebanon back 20 years. Can you say spite for spite's sake. I can't imagine what Hezbollah expects the outcome to be. Do they think that if they harass Israel enough they will just up and leave the Middle East. I'm not putting my money on that.

The thing is, this is going to take a little attention off of the palestinians, so it's kinda another muslim helping muslim thing. Hezbollah is stupid though and the outcome will be that the Lebanese people will get hurt by this. Israel will probably take out the electricity and start bombing other places in Lebanon. Israel will blame the government (still syrian puppets) responsible and that will lead to more bombings. Let's not forget that Hezbollah to Syria is like Clinton is to Monica. Yes, it was "Switzerland of the Middle East" , "Paris of the Middle East" and when something is so valuable and beautiful fuckers will want to mess with it.

I'm not trying to sound like this is exactly what is going on or that I know everything. But my analysis of everything is that Hezbollah is stupid and we all know that Israel is trying to get exactly what it wants.

1. We realize that either way this will really hurt Lebanon and it's people.
2. Israel actually started this a week ago in Saida when one or two of Hezbollah members were killed but Israel denied having anything to do with it.
3. Israel's goal from this was to provoke Hezbollah to do something stupid as it did and Israel will start fucking the hell out of Hezbollah and Lebanon as a whole. This will create total chaos and they will significantly weaken Hezbollah allowing Palestinians to come in as they did many years ago and the Palestinians will have a great deal of Lebanon.
4. Palestine's interest in Lebanon will definitely free up Israel from most of the conflict they have now with Palestine over all the land and shit.
5. Palestinians can now obtain Lebanese citizenship.
6. Lebanon gets fucked again and again.
7. Israel is happy and relaxed.

Israel is trying to blame the government while they know the government is against Hezbollah kidnapping those soldiers. They will put more and more pressure as they bomb the hell out of Lebanon.

I want Israel to keep working in parallel against the palestinians and hezbollah weakening them both in case they are thinking about overtaking Lebanon.

I don't necessarly blame Israel. It may be an over-reaction, but why would Israel want to invade Lebanon if not to stop attacks? As far as I can tell, the Palistinians want Israel to pack up and leave (not very likely), and the Israelis want to stay on the land (i.e. consolidate their gains), and live in peace. As long as the Palistinians expect departure as the only acceptible outcome, there will be no peace.

Israel can not start negotiating prisoner releases in exchange for kidnapped solders. That is a recipe for more kidnappings. All they can do is make the consequences for taking solders very harsh (some might say the current strategy is too harsh). I don't believe it will work though, but it may put pressure on Hezbollah from the more moderate factions in Lebanon.

The Palistinians have what might be called "battered victim's syndrome". There is a psychological condition where powerless people get satisfaction in being able to make someone so mad that they lose control and beat the victim up - "See, I have enough power to get him to beat me up". It's neurotic.

But, as long as the Palistinians view themselves as powerless victims every minute that Israel stays in Palistine, they are in for a long and unhappy future.

P.S. - Israel has been able to keep negotiated agreements, and live in peace, with Egypt. That shows that they are at least open to a peaceful coexsistance.

^ so you're calling for Israel to get nuked too? (it's in the area)

The Israeli military have shown themselves to be tactically stupid.

1. They want these soldiers back.

2. Hezbollah are refusing.

3. Hezbollah are a guerilla organization, i.e. there's nothing they have that the Israeli Air Force can shoot.

4. So the Israeli military responds by blowing up the one airport and all the bridges.

5. Israel is eventually going to realize they will have to invade Lebanon to get their troops back.

6. You idiots you blew up the bridges and one airport! How are you going to travel!

^^ I disagree. The Israelis may be doing something that is strategically stupid, but tactically, it's a pretty straightforward plan. You blow up the bridges and the airport so that the kidnappers and the hostages will have a much more difficult time travelling and leaving the country. Once you've cut off the region, you send in troops to sweep the area, laying waste and destruction across the countryside until you find the soldiers and then withdrawal.

Israel overreacted with Hamas, attacking too quickly, but now Hezbollah has probably miscalculated, poking an irritated Israel at the wrong time, expecting them to negotiate but instead having a massive military offensive as a response. Unless Hezbollah is attempting to create another firefight for some strategic objective, or if you believe the Iranian theory, that Iran is manipulating Hezbollah and Hamas to help deflect attention from their own nuclear crisis.

Uhm.

This has nothing to do with getting the soldiers back.

This has everything to do with having soldiers killed inside of Isreal and resulting retribution.

I believe that Hezbollah is getting what they want: Israel mauling the crap out of Lebanon. A predominantly Muslim country is getting bombed by a Jewish country supported by American firepower. What else could be better for recruiting Muslim teenagers?

Me (with zero strategy theory minus what I've seen in world events in my life) thinks this is going full-fledged war. Syria is going to get dragged in. Iran may be a proxy, but Israel will be unable to do anything about it. To fly into Iran or carry out military actions they will have to fly over...wait for it...Iraq. Iraq are now controlled by (according to our President, democratically-elected) Shiites. Iran are controlled by Shiites. Put two and two together, along with the view of how a majority of Iraqi Shiites view Israel.

And the U.S. can't do a thing about it unless they want to marginalize their presence there even more. They would have to either decry the Iraqi President they supposedly back as being the will of the people and join forces with Israel while increasing the insurgency against our forces there, or they're going to let Israel go for it on their own.

It's a good strategy for Iran if they did come up with it.

I know this is from wikipedia, but a great history read of Lebanon and their Civil War. For those that don't know, the Lebanese Civil War is probably one of the saddest episodes of the 20th century and is the reason the country is so screwed up today. Jews, Muslims, and Christians were all involved and at one point or another were all killing each other.

if you think israel can't fly over iraq, you are sadly mistaken

they could fly over irak and do loops over al-sadr's house and their isn't shit anyone there could do about it

as far as the iranians go, they are extremely overmatched in air power and with protecting their airspace.

the israelis could really do anything and everything they want in the middle east and the six day war proved that pretty well.

Iraqi Shiites and Iranian Shiites aren't on friendly terms.

Furthermore, Iraq has no Air Force. Unless you think US fighters will somehow shoot Isreali planes down, there's no issue with Isreal bombing Iran.

In fact, it would settle Iran's Nuclear question.

I believe that Hezbollah is telling the truth about not firing the missles into Haifa. It is very possible that a palestinian base in southern Lebanon did that to create more chaos. The palestinians want this, they're loving it. I just wonder if Israel can take them in parallel to the fullest extent.

The Iraqi government are pretty much a protectorate of U.S. military power. Iraqi airspace could easily be flown over by Israeli aircraft, but if they did that would mean the U.S. is letting them.

Look at this in terms of politics. The U.S. is trying to say the Iraqi government as sovereign and running the country now. You and I and others reading this know the truth about that, it's a political ploy. But Iraq is not sovereign and their president does not have full power if Israeli aircraft fly over Iraqi airspace. He would be assassinated within two weeks if he said that he allowed them to fly over.

The point is, the president is dependent on a population that hates Israel, and prefers Iran to Israel (Iran-Iraq was seen as a Sunni war in Iraq, Iraq is predominantly Shiite, as is Iran). The U.S. try to say the Iraqi president is in full power cause they want Arab nations to become democracies. If Israeli aircraft fly over, he can't be in full power can he? And there goes his legitimacy to Iraqis as a person independent of American control.

One other great thing I heard from representatives of the white house and Israel is that they know the Lebanese government has no control over Hezbollah which is supported by Iran and Syria. Israel before was referring to the Hezbollah controlled part of the government.

We know Israel destroyed bridges and lead to closing the airport to slow down Hezbollah transportation.

The worst part of this is that Hezbollah has no problem moving to Beirut fighting Israel from there in between christians and other Lebanese civilians.

^^ The method of exhaustion says no. Look at the 1967 War and the losses for each side as a percentage of their total population.

Israel, in terms of population, is a small country. The Arabs would outlast them in a full-out war.

^ Why would we want to involve ourselves?
For it to be a World War, it would have to involve more countries than those of Israel, Arab Middle East countries, and the U.S. I think most of the rest of the world would shrug their shoulders and let them kill each other.

it will be crazy. Honestly I see this definitely having a major factor into WWIII.

With the focus on the Middle East, Iran will strengthen its nuclear program, North Korea will start messing around more and more. The US is gonna start feeling much more pressure in the coming weeks.
