A friend of mine got me Final Fantasy IX for my birthday. I finally pulled it out to play it, and the game's not starting, so to speak. I'm playing it in my PS2. When the disc loads, I get the original Playstation logo, and the little sound effect with it. Then ... nothing. It just sits there. It's still sitting on the screen with that logo, but it doesn't advance at all. I made sure the controller was plugged in all the way, I tried it with my PS1 and PS2 memory cards connected, I tried it with just my PS1 memory card connected, and I tried it with no memory cards attached. The disc didn't look scratched at all. My friend also owns FFIX, and his version worked just fine on my PS2. Any ideas as to how to get it running?

So .... I have to crack the case of my PS2 open just so I can get it to play this game?

It's just disappointing that I'd have to do something so drastic to play the game. I got the PS2 used back in March of 2002, which means it's an old one (according to the articles I saw). I've never had a problem reading a single disc with it before, so this just catches me off-guard. I'll have to decide how much I want to play the game!!

its really a painless procedure, i've done it dozens of times to several PS2s without any problems

do other PSX discs work on your PS2?

I've played Chrono Cross, FF4, Chrono Trigger, and my friend's version of FFIX before on this PS2, and never had any problems before.

before = a few months ago.

I popped in FF4 and CT (the only ones on that list that I own), and both of those worked. I guess it's probably just a bum disc.

Try putting in one of the other discs and see if that works.

What the fuck ever.

FF IX was trash, I'll agree.

FF VIII was gold.

FF IX was slightly less than gold. Silver-ish, if you will.

A masturbatory excercise to see how many "classic" FF references a developer can shove into a game, if you will.

I never played FF8. I've played FF4 (boring), FF7 (very good), FF9 (also very good), FFX (great), and FFX-2 (trash).

And I don't think "blowing in the slot" works for a game that runs on a CD/DVD.

Sometimes it is just a bum disc. I bought Fear Effect 2 when it came out and when I got to the second disc it wouldn't read. The disc itself appeared slightly warped. The data looked "wavy" if that makes any sense. I was able to exchange it at Best Buy with no problems. Ask your friend if he still has the receipt.

Relevent to the OP: have you tried the disc in someone else's ps2 and/or ps1?

My contribution to the pissing contest: 8 was the best ps1 final fantasy. 9 was a lot of fun, but nothing is really memorable about it except for the cool black mage kid. Both are better than 7, which is possibly the most overrated game ever.

See the problem is you've had so many good games in there the playstation won't accept bad ones. Cut a third off the cd and you should have a totally better game.

And yes Jon, 8 sucks, shut up with your summons.
