i think i remember reading that if you are due a refund you are not required to file. Although I don't remember if that was for NC, VA, or Federal taxes and I don't remember if that was just for my specific case (income below $x) 7/16/2006 4:06:05 PM |

it's only a problem if you owe money.
technically you can be fined, but i've never heard of it being enforced unless you actually owed more money, and then you have to pay interest.. 7/16/2006 5:34:18 PM |

I always wondered what would happen if you just ignored doing your taxes. My roommate's girlfriend said her dad has never filed, so I suppose he just never owed any more then what they took out of his paycheck. 7/16/2006 6:29:42 PM |

my friend said his friend told him to pay like 25 dollars to some h&r block person and they could fix it
i, i mean my friend, might not want to go that route though
he was due about 500 back for state and federal 7/16/2006 6:38:28 PM |

I would think that if you or your friend was due back money they would encourage you not to file taxes ever. 7/16/2006 6:43:26 PM |

I think I got an extension in time... At least for one of them. What's really going to suck is filing old NC taxes next year from drill pay and stuff when I'm not even in the state anymore. 7/16/2006 8:55:22 PM |

yeah . . . my only source of income last year was from my co-op in VA. But because my permenant address was in NC, I had to file NC taxes and pay them some money. 7/16/2006 9:27:38 PM |

Federal Taxes are more important than State Taxes. If you ignore the IRS, they'll penalize you with interest, and there are people who lose their houses. Tax info is available in all public libraries and not so hard to find - also for NC: this website can help http://www.dor.state.nc.us/electronic/nc40.html Most states make you pay a penalty for filing late. 7/17/2006 12:51:11 AM |

Good thing I don't really own shit they can take from me - if they took me to litigation or something (which will never happen) I'd just write them a check. I have the money, I've just been lazy on filling out the forms and sending it to them 7/17/2006 12:53:18 AM |

what if you lost and/or a company sent a w-2 to the wrong address...i'm willing to bet papa johns sent it to college inn 7/17/2006 1:05:16 AM |

You can compensate for a lost W-2 by using the employer ID number and your AGI (adjusted gross income), if you have it from a paycheck stub. The IRS also will keep a record and calculate what your refund or tax will be. 7/17/2006 1:42:52 AM |

you have 3 years to file taxes, as long as you don't owe.
i just filed mine on july 4th, and i didn't fill out an extension. i submitted just a w-2, and it was accepted. i should be getting my check soon.

h&r block is a little more expensive than $25 i think 7/17/2006 12:07:03 PM |
superchevy All American 20874 Posts user info edit post |
don't bother wasting your money by going to h&r block, etc. you can file for free online. you don't have to fill out and pay an extension fee. just file online, like you normally would've before april 4th. there's no penalty for filing now.
i called the irs before i filed 2 weeks ago to verify all this stuff. i spoke with a representative for about 30 minutes (we carried on an irrelevant conversation after my questions were answered )
