at my place of business they have disabled most of the common ports for IM clients.... I am told there are a few available to go through, but I dont know how to find them...

any ideas?

You could install Tor (http://tor.eff.org/) and set up the IM Client to use your local computer as a proxy. Should work for you. I haven't done it but in theory it should work.

if the IT person is worth anything at all, you arent going to be able to work around this

just use putty to handle the proxy to an outside server and also to encrypt your data so the Admin doesn't know what you are doing.

If you are running a Windows system, enable remote desktop and remote in to your home computer from there. Remote desktop = encryption and nothing potentially bad cached on your work computer.

I SERIOUSLY doubt the IT folks have port 3389 blocked/disabled.

I think you're forgetting that when you're talking about gestapo IT people they tend to work with whitelists not blacklists so your logic is flawed.
