had a discussion after watching a tnt movie in hd. DO movies have to be recorded in hd?? i was under the assumption that the quality that they make movies at is scaled down when put into digital dvd format, so they'd jsut take the same movie and record it with less compression for hd. so which is it?

most movies are "recorded" on film. which is analog, and thus FAR better looking than most any digital format out there these days. this really isn't obvious though when only watching it on a tv-sized screen generally.

i'll admit that might be true...though seriously, 95% of moviegoers will watch movies in the digital format and realize the picture is BETTER...no cigarette burns, no green lines running through the movie, no random dots...how can anyone say that is better than a smooth picture without artifacts?

suggestions? i've been to carmike (i'm sure they're like every chain and don't care), united artists (i think that's the name), consolidated, and mission valley (independently owned, right?) i've seen it in all of them, so if you have a suggestion, i'll be more than happy to check it out

some damage is inevitable, though it shouldn't be too widespread. i haven't been horribly annoyed by galaxy for independent stuff (where the prints were relatively new). i haven't been distracted by north hills or consolidated.

second run theaters and campus cinema are horribly bad. i've had mixed experiences with mission valley.

basically: a well-maintained film is of higher quality than its current digital counterpart. THOUGH there are going to some imperfections. the big advantage of digital media is that there isn't the cost of sending heavy prints around the country, not to mention the lack of degradation.

the new theater that wilson jsut put up is an all digital, so it may provide you a reference to compare to.
