I'm rebuilding a stock dana 35 (96 grand cherokee that will see no off-road time). I don't want to have to buy a tool just to pull the carrier bearings from the carrier housing. If any of you have one or have a better solution I'd appreciate it.

failing the puller, ive used an air chisel before with moderate results. cutoff wheel works too.

you could take it to a machine shop.

seriously though buy a dana 44 even the aluminum one the v8s come with and throw it in there.

unless you're good at setting backlash and doing all of that stuff...

it's not my jeep. It's going good so far, and I already have all the parts to finish the job. I've got only $200 in it with brand new parts. The grand doesn't need anything more then that 35, not on stock tires and road use

Backlash doesn't scare me, it's only a matter of shimming up the carrier properly. Plus, I'd rebuild any used axle I got anyway, so there is no need for the extra cost.

xjs yjs and tjs need more than a 35 with stock tires

a heavy ass zj friggin better

i have a 29 spline 8.25

i would think that a 35 would be just fine for everyday driving. my sis had a 35 in her 5.2 zj and i beat the shit outta that jeep. never had one problem with the rear. now if you take it offroad that'd a totally different story. ask me how i know.

I have to disagree, unless you are using the vehicle for something other then normal driving...(highway in this case).... then the 35 is more then enough. But I'm sure we could argue about the definition of "normal," but the simple fact is, I'm rebuilding the 35...and that is all. I've never even heard of the 35 breaking an axle outside of normal use (ie. stock set up on stock tires). not that it's never happend, it's just unlikely. Plus you have to consider the rest of the vehicle. His car has maybe 50-60k left in it, that 35 will not wear out that soon unless I do a poor job. His biggest mistake was owning a jeep and not know a bolt from a nut, so in short, the axle will probably way outlive the rest of the vehicle, hence no need for extra cost.
