Yeah, I was surprised too... Actually came here to see what had happened. Even the support forums were down for me.

Anyhow,

That makes 1 in 2 years that was noticeable.

"Network problems resolved.
July 17, 2006 at 7:01 pm PST by jeremy

Today’s network problems were caused by not 1, not 2, not even 3, but 4 separate issues.

First, one of our older distribution switches decided to give up on life.
After replacing it with newer hardware, everything ran just fine for a couple hours. Then, it decided our network topology had changed (apparently due to a different default configuration since the old days when it was deployed), and started dropping a good percentage of traffic.
This issue also affected another switch that some of our file servers plug into, so customer data was unavailable to a good portion of our hosting servers.
Consequently, one of our more active mail servers tried to dump all of the backed up email all at once, saturating some of the network that it’s on.
Once these configuration issues were resolved, one of the network interface cards in our main firewall machine died, requiring a quick swap.

We’re still working on some of the after-effects, and there may be some slowness while things get caught up, but everything should be back to normal later tonight."

herein lies the rub

if you get stuck sharing resources with a bunch of selfish fucktards and use their "unlimited storage" or "unlimited bandwidth" to share their kiddie anime porn with their other fucked up perverted friends then you're gonna have a shitton of outtages.

if the 6 hours of downtime are in the middle of the day, then it's a very big deal for someone who needs their email to arrive when it's sent, not 6 hours later

my current host has never gone down in 2 years, but it HAS slowed up significantly a couple of times, which is almost as annoying

^^ I just renewed hosting with them, for 7.95 a month for 2 years. I used a coupon and scored $97 off 2 year hosting price, so I ended up paying roughly $94, which comes down to 3.90/month for 20GB storage, 1 TB bandwidth, and almost all the features the other hosting plans have except for ssl. plus they transferred my domain free of charge. i've been pretty happy with them so far

if i use one of those $97 off codes for a 1-year plan, when the plan expires, can i renew using another promo code, or am i stuck paying full price at that point. what if you close the account and open a new one and use whatever promo they'll have going on in a year. anybody had to do this?

i was just thinking about making another dreamhost thread (because the ones that turned up on search weren't the ones i was looking for)...so are y'all still happy with them? i'd like to host multiple domains on one set of space...is that possible with them? i currently have a reseller plan, which allows me to assign different logins so that each "customer" has their own cpanel, but they're all maintained by me, so that's not really necessary at this point

are they still running the $97 off deal? how much is it after that?

unlimited domains can be set up on one hosting account. You just need the discount code or referral link http://www.dreamhost.com/r.cgi?131277 you'll get the $97 off for a years hosting. It ends up coming to $22.40 after that. I've been really happy with the service and have moved a few other hosting accounts into this one for work. Verio had been complete shit for basic database reliability and I haven't had a single problem with dreamhost.
