Brewers Yeast with garlic. The fleas don't like the taste of the garlic that's in the animals oils. They may jump on and bite but once they taste it they'll leave to nest somewhere else. My dog had fleas the beginning of last week and after giving him the tablet for a few days I can't find any sign of fleas, flea dirt or him scratching and biting the wounds. Very inexpensive too.
Just thought I'd pass the word. 7/18/2006 9:43:38 AM |

if you used Frontline every month like a responsible owner you wouldn't have to worry about fleas

Frontline is rather expensive and this works more naturally and even gives the animal nutrients while riding of the pesky fuckers.
It doesn't really matter where you put it gunzz, I know there were a lot of threads about fleas in chit chat a bit ago but this does seem like a lounge-appropriate thread.

If all this does is makes them go somewhere else...does that mean your house will be flea infested? 7/18/2006 10:34:59 AM |

I haven't noticed any fleas in the house or especially in the bed. That's probably the most annoying thing about the fleas, trying to sleep while being bitten. I've had less bites since the brewers yeast. Maybe if you have a serius case you should bomb the house but if you start out with zero fleas or minimal amount and give them the nutrient supplement you shouldn't have a problem. I haven't. I've also used this product on my outdoor cat and see no evidence of fleas in my house. 7/18/2006 10:39:35 AM |

You probably shouldn't feed garlic to your pet, because it is thought to cause red blood cell damage (onions too). See: Hematologic changes associated with the appearance of eccentrocytes after intragastric administration of garlic extract to dogs. Am J Vet Res. November 2000;61(11):1446-50. or just search garlic + dogs in any vet journal database.

The amount of garlic is minimal. Don't feed the dog chunks of fresh garlic. The vitamin supplement has much more in it than just garlic. 7/18/2006 3:11:04 PM |

Our vet recommended we give our dog garlic tablets for years for his breath and coat and whatnot. They even sell garlic tablets specifically for dogs, that seems like one of those out there case studies. 7/19/2006 7:22:59 AM |

^just because it goes against what's been done for years doesn't mean it's "out there" i guess you think cigarettes really dont' cause cancer because people have smoked for YEARS
Less than a week is hardly enough to call it a success. And like someone else said, now they've just jumped off and layed eggs in your carpet and in two weeks when the hundreds of larvae become adults, then you can let us know if it works
this is how i see it, if a major company spends major bucks on products and development, i'm sure they've looked at all inexpensive ways to do it, and if it's THAT cheap, i'm sure they explored that method as well....besides, is this method waterproof, does it kill ticks? i want my flea prevention product to KILL the fleas, not just repel them, thats kind of dumb

Then go ahead and get something that KILLS the fleas. I have never had any problem with fleas in the house after giving the animals the garlic tab. I told you earlier I used this on my outdoor cat as well which I've been doing for several months. I just recently started using it on my puppy. Usually the flea is going to bite them outside and will jump off outside. I know a lot of college kids who don't have 95 bucks to spend every 6 months to rid of the fleas so I was suggesting a cheaper way. I don't know what it does for ticks but I've never had any of my dogs or cats get them. 7/19/2006 10:51:00 AM |
elkaybie All American 39626 Posts user info edit post |
obligatory if a college kid can't spend 95 every 6 months on their dog for flea tick treatment then he/she shouldn't have a pet in the first place
V i made a typo...but still...50 or 95...if you can't afford the treatment for your pet, you prolly shouldn't have one

I bought a three month supply of frontline for my dog and I goofed on the first dose and put it on after a bath instead of waiting three days. 2 weeks later and Major was covered again so I called the vet, she told me about my mistake of putting on the meds too early and suggested doing a half dose and then 2 weeks later, another half dose. That didn't work either. The roommate's dog had frontline applied this past week so in a last ditch effort, I used the last dose on Major also and avoided bathing. Jasmine has no fleas and my dog is covered!
I HATE THIS. What can I do? Should I ask for a refund? When will flea season be over? Online says flea season lasts all year...I am going crazy. 10/10/2006 11:07:20 PM |

Capstar is an oral flea medicine. I used some on my cat yesterday, her fleas were dead within the hour. Problem is, they're in the carpet. I'm setting off a bomb in the room tomorrow to fix that. 10/10/2006 11:10:00 PM |

My mother said her cat was going through a real bad flea infestation and finally went to the vet. They recommended Advantage and she said they gave her some tablet that killed all of the fleas within half an hour, and then was told to put the Advantage stuff on. She said it worked like a miracle and the cat was making herself bleed from scratching so much. Maybe go back to the vet with the stuff, claim it isn't working, show your distress and tell them there's no use for the rest of the product in your hand what are you to do with it? Not happy you wasted money on something that doesn't work. If you bitch enough they'll do something about it. May need to flea bomb your place though too. 10/10/2006 11:10:37 PM |

We flea bombed two weekends ago and then the other roommate let Jasmine in before she was bathed/treated and reinfested the house.
We might bomb again just at the end of the season but we haven't seen a lot around the house.
I guess I'll go to the vet when I go back home in a week and a half and see if they will cut me a break.
So, they have a pill to take and then the spot treatment? Doesn't that poison them?? 10/10/2006 11:13:01 PM |

how do you check your dogs for fleas? you're supposed to look around for flea dirt (shit?) right?
and when bomb the house, do you bomb every room or just the main room where they hang out.
also do fleas have seasons like flies...bad in the summer, not so bad in the winter or something like that?
thanks for any info
^^^^^ and yeah it really sounds like you need to bomb, bathe, keep them mostly inside for a couple days, then apply frontline.

^We did bomb, bathe weekly, did a flea dip, and Major is only outside to use the potty. That's why it's damn ridiculous.
Fleas supposedly survive when the degrees are between 50 and 90...so usually they die out in the winter and come back in March/April...I don't know when the season ends..
You bomb each room in the house...open all doors like closets and such.
Check dogs for fleas by flipping them over and searching the groin area to spot them is the easiest way. The dirt looking flea poop is anothe tale tell sign. 10/10/2006 11:55:44 PM |

^ fleas must LOVE your dogs then. I have two dogs and leave them outside for up to an hour or two at a time and they don't get fleas.

What people don't realize is, is that fleas are pests that can and have become immune to commonly overused flea medications. I hate to say it, but it's the truth. I've heard of too many people chat with me and are frustrated because they are diehard flea prevention users, but their animals are still having problems with them. As a solution to this, you can alternate brands of flea protection that you use - say frontline one month, and advantage the next, and so on. This way, the fleas don't get used to the same chemical concentrations of pesticides all the time. (I've heard this from professional groomer friends of mine, as well as a vet).
The brewer's yeast and garlic combo is always a good avenue against fleas. Also, keeping cedar chips in your house, dog's bed, common areas are another good way to repel fleas in your living areas. I've never bombed my house, but I've done the carpet powder. My dogs have been with me in my apartment for about 3 years now, and they're not on flea protection... no fleas! 10/11/2006 8:52:09 AM |
