I remember him being rather adamant about not using old answers or anything. He's a really nice guy and I really wouldn't want to go outside what he prefers. He'll help you out a lot if you go to him for help, anyway.

not true. at all

i usually don't stand up for professors, but Kolbas is one of the best professors in the EE department. he's a highly entertaining guy, who takes great pride in what he teaches, and makes the classes very interesting.

I took the lasers class, as well as his fiber obtics class. I didn't really have much of an interest in taking these classes because stuff like that just doesn't interest me. I took the lasers class mainly for scheduling purposes. Well, the lasers class ended up being one of the best classes I've taken, and think that is because of Kolbas. I enjoyed it so much that I took his fiber optics class, which was equally as fun.

He's also a pretty easy-going, down-to-earth kind of guy. I remember he used to come to the Daniels study lounge about 30 minutes before class on days homeworks were due, and sit down with groups of students in his classes who were still working on the assignment to answer questions. He wants you to do well.

Just don't cheat. He believes very strongly in making sure that every student gets an equal opportunity in his classes, and will exercise every resource he has to punish cheaters.

and if chillz thinks he is an asshole and only helps students he likes, then i would imagine that chillz is one of those students who only puts forth the minimal effort to get a passing grade. you can't go to his office hours, or speak to him after class and expect him to just tell you what you want to hear. he'll discuss things with you, but you have to put forth the effort and show him that you're serious.

as for the scandal, it's been a long time since I was in the class, so I don't really remember all the details. When I took the Optics course a year later, someone asked Kolbas what happened, and he told us what he could (because the case was still pending).

Basically in the circa 2004 graduating class, there was a group of students who were a bunch of slackers and did whatever they needed to do to get by, which included copying other students' homeworks, projects, etc. One of the biggest idiots of them all was this loud-mouthed asshole redneck named Adam who thought he should be treated like a king because his father was also an EE.

Well, somehow, this group apparently obtained the answers to one of the tests Dr. Kolbas was giving, and hid them somewhere outside of the classroom (for some reason I think it was in a bathroom). Every now and then a student in the group would go to the bathroom and look at the answers. Kolbas got suspicious and discovered their plot.

Anyways, he got mad, sent them all to the academic review board (or whatever the hell cheaters get sent to), and things got real dirty. I'm not certain what happened to these people (some were graduating seniors), but I think Kolbas had to eventually drop the charges for reasons he could not say other than the case was taking too long.

Kolbas may only help students he likes, but he likes pretty much everyone who tries. When I took his class he wouldn't give out practice test answers because he said that in the past people had used them to cheat in the past and had managed to get off through a technicality. As a result, he really just doesn't want to leave that possibility open again.

I spent 4 years hating those fuckers. Everybody knew they were doing that shit and nobody would nail them.
