DoW is a quality product. I love it. But don't underestimate the beauty of Starcraft. After a decade in publication, it's a perfectly balanced, fine tuned piece of RTS art. Starcraft will also run on a wristwatch which means that you don't need a near state of the art machine to play. Which is good for random LAN games where I can pull out some of my old boxes and my friends and I can play.

It's an entertaining game, but a well-polished gem? It's pretty much the Olde English of RTS games.

Fun, but far from "finely tuned piece of art". If anything it began to show Blizzard that they could set their bar much, much lower.

you really have no clue as to this industry or polish in a pc or console game.

Starcraft was one of the most polished, perfectly balanced, and most entertaining games when it was released.

The thing is still sold in stores and millions still play it, professionally for that matter. It won over a dozen game of the year/RTS of the year/best multiplayer game awards.

Low bar, run of the mill standard games dont reach this level.

Its fine to like other series or newer games that take the genre to the next level better, but your view of the game just reveals how fucking ignorant you are of games as a whole.

Millions of people bought Britney Spears CDs. Millions of people play World of Warcraft (piece of shit MMORPG if there ever was one. BUT IT SOLD A LOT, THAT MUST MEAN IT RULES).

What is your fucking point? Your argument is total shit. Success in sales or in how many people play it have little or nothing to do with actual quality. Games have been, by and far, total shit for a very long time. Starcraft is anything but a "finely tuned piece of art".

Name one thing the game did that was revolutionary in any aspect of the word? Blizzard improved some when they made War3, but if you look at "professional" starcraft players, you'll see what I mean about Starcraft. Many Blizzard RTS games have a frantic pace to them, there isn't a lot to your "strats" except what units you go. War3 was an improvement on that, to an extent -- I think War3 had much better gameplay concepts than their earlier RTS'.

You are pretty much wrong about everything you say and think.

Yeah I'm not swinging from Blizzard's dick, so I must be an idiot.

Blizzard does lots of things right -- they've done story, setting, and mood through art assets just right. (well they fucked up the story in WOW pretty bad, but we'll let that one slide).

Blizzard's great at those things, and thus the single player modes are really fun. So are the multiplayer modes! But claiming that any of their RTS' are somehow the pinnacle of the genre is like saying Halo is the best FPS of all time. Halo's fun when you're sitting on the couch shooting your buddies, eating doritos, and drinking mountain dew, but that doesn't make for a quality game, it makes for a fun game in the right circumstances.

youre a genious.

no fucking shit the later RTS games have improved. YOU FUCKING THINK. YOU THINK AS THE INDUSTRY AROUND THE GENRE DEVELOPES AND EXPANDS THAT RECENT RELEASES IMPROVE ON GAMES 8+ YEARS OLD?

jesus youre a fucking mongoloid.

Did you even play the game? How many games before hand balanced 3 races that controlled and played completely different? Did you play the game when it was released? How many mother fucking bugs did you notice?

And since when does a finely polished and balanced game have to be revolutionary? Who the fuck claimed it was revolutionary? It set a lot of standards as far as gameplay, balance, and polish go. I realize you have no fucking clue as to video game history or any aspect of it, so just trust the smart ones when they tell you this.

The game is recognized by many publications and professionals as one of the best games of all time. It has made single digit appearances on innumerable lists such as these published by people and companies who are all much much smarter than you.

Games havent been total shit for a while. There is just more shit in the market place. But people with your inability to pick the gems out of the shit piles may come under this retarded impression.

Everything you think you know about the gaming industry is wrong. You should just stop speaking on it now.

the idiot is comparing the music industry with is 10-15 dollar cds that cost nothing to make and can be pumped out in a couple months

to the video game industry where titles can take years to develop costs rediculously more to make, and cost significantly more to purchase and use.

Shitty games dont sell millions of copies, it just doesnt fucking happen.

Sigh. It was an improvement for Blizzard, is what I was saying. There are RTS from that era that were much more innovative (TA for one).

Quote :

Other games at that time had two playable sides, pretty much. They added another race, and they were pretty well balanced. There also weren't a whole lot of unit choices, so I'd hope it was balanced.

I don't remember many bugs in Starcraft when I got it, but let's not try to cite Blizzard for being good with launches (Diablo 2).

Gameplay? It's polished from an art/mood/setting standpoint, but GAMEPLAY? You are hilarious.

Or, there are very few good games out and it takes a while to find them. Starcraft isn't one of them. Sorry. Appealing to authority isn't exactly going to help you here. The gameplay/focus of what you're doing is still shit for an RTS.

It's not about being smart, it's about being able to point out the design decisions that make a game decent. But your continued attacks at my intelligence are cute.

How is appealing to authority not going to help?

People who make the games, play them for a living, and review them all have the game as one of the best of all time.

and youre out of your mind to think starcraft isnt polished from a gameplay perspective.

Quote :

Youre correct, I thought about adding 'up till Diablo 2, blizzard had the highest quality control of any gaming company out there'. The Diablo 2 launch was fucked in part because of Bnet, and in part because the balancing of the game just wasnt there.

Quote :

There were plenty of unit choices. not to mention every additional race you add exponentially changes the balancing problem.

And you still have yet to explain or give one reason why the gameplay is shit for an RTS. Or explain how starcraft isnt even a good game.

In all honestly it sounds like you just get zerg rushed and you cant figure out how to stop it.

I'm telling you Starcraft was a fun and balanced game, it just didn't do anything that would make it the holy grail of its genre like some people (you) would tell me.

I was decent at Starcraft, and no I never got "zerged rush and couldn't figure out how to stop it". That's the most tired argument when somebody doesn't think a game rulz #1: "ha ha u must have gotten PWNTTTT". No.

I'm just saying that the controls were far from being great. This game in itself spawned the "Korean" style of gaming. You shouldn't have to violently twitch around and slam around on your hot keys like a fucking maniac to be great at an RTS game.

^^ um, never said it was a holy grail of any genre. There are better RTS games out now that have improved on its style and gone beyond.

never was arguing that.

So you dont like games where the speed of your input can help you. Maybe you should get out of the RTS category and in to the turn based category.

Maugan is just mad that Blizzard built on his shitty franchise and made something that actually succeeded.

I did love some TA:Kingdoms, after the patch that fixed everything. Thats where I got my handle.

I have to chime in from the usability / interface design perspective.

Starcraft, in terms of UI, set some REALLY high standards in terms of efficiency and accuracy in it's UI. Very few RTS games CAN come down to brute force manual dexterity as a major factor in winning in the elite ranks because they had/have very cumbersome UI's.

There are certainly some deficiencies (namely the group size limit) in the UI, but the sheer amount of on-the-fly configuration that the user is allowed, and the manner in which it was implemented was pretty damn impressive.

Not to mention that not only did they manage to balance three different races, but also balanced between the units, buildings, procedures and economies. Not an easy thing to do at all, especially in a game where the environmental advantages per race aren't very apparent or useful (aka Civilization Series, AOE, et al pretty much).

The UI is extremely discoverable, has a very fast and apparent learning curve, the game itself achieves one of the most difficult and rare paradigms in strategy games; namely an almost entirely discoverable UI, context and strategy.

And in the case of the "commercial success doesn't make it good", with Interactive Products, YES, commercial success is a major indicator of a "good" product. Whether it fits YOUR likes, taste or ideals is irrelevent. People do not buy shit en-mass. With entertainment, the dollar speaks. And seeing that the game still outsells quite a few games some 10 years later is a very very solid indication of it's worth and quality. No one is saying it's perfect, or an ideal, but it's definitely a very good model.

This wasn't even my point you snide chotch. I've played plenty of games where reaction time and manual dexterity separated the men from the boys. It's not even that I was bad at doing it -- it just changes the focus of the game from the "war" to the "battle". Instead of being the commander of a war, you're telling every single unit exactly what to do. Even Warcraft 3 had that symptom. The better you were at micromanaging the entire battle, the better off you were, instead of dictating broad strategy.

The game's strategy is too myopic.

World of Warcraft is a fucking quality product. Just because you're a fucking loser and have 8+ hours a day to spend on a game and it doesnt challenge you doesnt change that.

Its accessible, its fighting system is not matched in any other MMO, its graphics are unique and rediculously well done, and their social construction is nowhere NEAR matched.

You. Are. Wrong. yet again. seriously, stop talking about video games.

Uh I don't have 8+ hours a day to play a game. Nowadays I don't pick up anything that I can't put down after 15-30 mins because that's about how much I allot to video games. But it's great that you have all of these ill-founded assumptions about my life, and use them to try to prop up Blizzard!

Its fighting system is not matched by any other MMO? It's graphics are ridiculously well done? Ahahahahahah. Social construction is nowhere near matched?

What other MMOs have you played? You seriously have no fucking clue at all. You played DAOC? UO? Shadowbane? Eve (I haven't played Eve but I've heard from people who have very similar tastes to me what it's like, and I have the rundown -- just not willing to invest the time)? WOW's PVP is embarassingly one-dimensional, and there's a ridiculously low number of actual character builds. I could start an entire thread about WOW's shortcomings so let's not even go there -- the game is horrible, and just because tons of people (including you) are rabid fanboys for it means nothing. It's the Bud Light of MMORPGs -- it'll getcha drunk, but god damn is it piss.

thats pretty untrue. wow's got a better combat system than any other mmorpg out there. eve is in a different category since you're controlling a starship.. but still, wow maintains the edge. guild wars, final fantasy online, dungeons and dragons online, nwn, diablo, so on and so forth, all had/have really shitty combat and pvp mechanics compared to wow.

Here come the testicle and Jew jokes again. Next time you come down off one of your tirades, try something new. I'm not the tallest person alive, for example. You can use that. I'm not really good at sports either, that'd make for an even better zinger. Together, we can get you insulting me properly, or at the very least, with an ounce of creativity.

Personally, I always liked Red Alert. I didn't play Starcraft until years after it was released, but always enjoyed it when I did play it.

You arguing with people that Starcraft isn't a good game is just as futile as people arguing with you that you're a moron, despite how valid either claim actually is.

The rendering engine isnt the best no. I never claimed anything about the engine. The graphics are extremely well done. This is an extremely low polygon game and they hide it remarkably well. The texture work and artistic talent this game has is top of the line. Not to mention the animations are very high quality as well.

your analogies just prove to show your lack of ability to form a cohesive argument. They are pathetic and dont even apply to the topic you're trying to apply them to.

Quote :

Actually, youre completely wrong. the fact that over 5, i think even 6 million people play the game means a lot. Shitty games dont sell millions. It doesnt happen, get it through your thick little skull. The game is very well designed, its extremely accessible to the casual gamer and as this site proves even hardcore gamers play it for a time.

The game isnt the ultimate challenge for hard core MMO players, but then who gives a fuck? Who wrote the definition of an MMO that it has to focus on PvP, or that it must take an inordinate amount of time investment to get enjoyment or accomplishments?

Blizzard was smart. They know what appeals to the average gamer, and what is addicting about an MMO. They created a world that is completely immersive, easy to pick up and play with friends, and not easy to put down. Noone is claiming it is perfect in all areas, but it is obviously the best MMO out right now. And noone gives a flying fuck if you dont think it fits the mold of a good MMO.
