What would be funny is if one of his daughters got paralyzed in a drunk driving accident (since they like to hit up the bars so much I hear), and the money from the stem cell research that he vetoed could give them movement again. Would sort be like Dick Cheney's daughter and the whole gay marriage thing. Kinda. 7/19/2006 3:05:54 PM |

I'm not that offended. If there was any validity to the experiments they could get all the private funding they wanted.
If wall-street refuses to fund your research, why should uncle sam be expected to do so? 7/19/2006 4:42:47 PM |

Notice how youre average uninformed person of average intellegence doesnt comprehend how science gets funding. Such a person has no idea how important federal funding is, and how much private money is distrubted through federal agencies.
Your average joe thinks he knows about 10x more about this subject then he/she actually does.
They can parrot talking points, but thats about it.

ADULT stem cell research, the one with scientific results, is OK.
EMBRYONIC stem cell research, the one with no results whatsoever and with the side effect of killing people, is NOT OK. THIS is the kind of stem cell research Bush vetoed, and rightfully so.

with conservatives, if it has the potential to be life human life IT IS HUMAN LIFE
of course bush doesnt have the balls to ban the destruction of embryoes, the only logical position to derive from such a belief
he just wants to make sure their destruction doesnt help cure anything -- he wont do anything about the fact that hundreds of embryoes are destroyed daily by fertility clinics

Unfortunately, it's red meat being thrown to the party base by Bush. Elections are right around the corner. . . .
Saying that both parties do this sort of thing doesn’t make me feel any better--and more importantly, the decision doesn’t heal anyone who needs it. Even though I’m not a big fan of his, it reminds me of a line from a song by John Mellencamp: “Calling it your job, ol’ hoss, sure don’t make it right.” Yeah. . .exactly. 7/19/2006 7:25:57 PM |

If Bush is really subscribing to that logic, then he'd have to ban menstrual periods and masturbation. Afterall, those wasted eggs and sperm have the potential to become human life! We can't allow precious life to be so heinously murdered!
I know that what I just put is a strawman at best, but whatever. Bush is an idiot and this veto only further confirms it for me.7/19/2006 8:58:56 PM |

those are unfertilized eggs, i said embyroes
they think only an egg attains the status of human life once fertilized by a sperm.

What would be funnier is if private industry poured money into stem cell research, because even superman told me that all you have to do is throw money at it and BAM, it solves everything.

AHAH
his inconsistency is pitifull ... he only speaks out against the destruction of embyoes when people want to use them for reserach
he says nothing about the fertility clinics that destroy countless numbers of embyoes just so they can get one to stick in a uterus.
IE; destroying dozens of human lives is OK if youre trying to create a life, but not if youre trying to do research to cure disease and save lives.

So much incorrectidude...so little time
First, what polls show it is an OVERWHELMING MAJORITY that support GOVERNMENT funded research. That could be true, but I want a few examples.
Second, you're totally overlooking that the veto is part of our democratic system. So he's simply using our democracy in the way it was intended to be used. Now if they can garner enough support to overturn the veto, it will become law.
