zxappeal could appreciate this (hell, he probably already knows this). A guy from my rx-7 club has like an 85 Toyota Cressida that originally had a 5M-GE in it, with a factory 5 speed. Well he swapped in a JDM 6M-GE into the thing. Apparently the 6M is a 3 liter inline six just like the 7M (late model cressida's and Mk III Supra's) except it has the unusual configuration of DOHC with 12 valves, as opposed to the DOHC 24 valve of the 7M. The 5M, which was sold in the U.S. Mk II Supra and those Cressidas, is only a 2.8 liter.
Interesting thing is, the 6M is a direct swap into a 5M platform. It uses the exact same engine mounts and wiring harness, and bolted right up to his transmission (he didn't even have to take it out at all). My friend found the motor in a junkyard. Somebody had tried to install it into a Mk II Supra (which has the 5M) but mistakenly thought he needed to hack up the wiring harness... so the Supra never ran even though they had already reconditioned and resealed the motor.
And the best part about the 6M is that it makes almost as much power as the 7M (195 vs 200, although JDM engines have less emissions shit) but has pretty much none of the headgasket and rod knock bullshit. My friend is going to run a stock ct-26 turbo and manifold on this motor and make it into a track car. It's already stripped out and weighs 2960. It should be able to do nearly 300whp and be pretty damn quick. 7/24/2006 12:12:12 AM |
