Hello,
2000 Grand am V6
Recently had my car not be able to start, was diagnosed to be a failed Fuel Pump. I had this replaced. 6 days later and my Check engine light comes on. The code it is throwing is P0440 Evaporative Emissions Control System Malfunction
It says item number 2, which is a small leak. Im going to try replacing my Gas cap, (i had an aftermarket locking one) but i think they might have messed up some of the lines when they dropped the fuel tank (On the car they have the charcoal gas resiviour on the side of the gas tank).
Im going to take it back to them and bitch, but I don't want to get screwed.
Mainly i want to konw, could this have been caused by the work they proformed (They replaced the fuel pump, which required them to drop the gas tank) or is it just bad luck on my accord.
Ryan

^stand corrected. It's part of the lines to and from the fuel tank, the filler neck, and around the intake manifold. The canister can be literally ANYWHERE, as its primary function is to absorb fuel vapors as pressure builds in the fuel tank (due to temp change primarily). The canister purge solenoid can be anywhere between the canister and the intake manifold/throttle body. 7/24/2006 12:23:53 PM |

The solonoid is over the intake manafold, it looks good and the lines are on there good. The canaster is right up under the gas tank (I have no fining clue why they put it there) but you have to move it to get to the fuel filter and gas tank.
Another owner discribed it this way on a forum
in my 00 its just in front of the fuel tank, its kinda boxy... 12x6x8 inches or so... gotta move it to access fuel filter
They replaced the fuel filter in additon to the pump 7/24/2006 1:16:42 PM |

Update
15th July 2006: Have car towed to pep boys, Take car in wont start, say problem is that fuel pump is bad and needs new fuel filter, I have both these replaced
19th July 2006: Notice car does not register gas level properly, reports empty however when I put in 8 gallons of gas the car now reports full.
212t July 2006: Check engine light comes on, have scanned at AutoZone p0440 Number 2, have them reset the code thinking it’s a gas cap
23nd Code comes back p0440 -same code
Call pep boys, they suggest bringing car in on Sunday, but unfortunately I have other commitments and can’t be without a car. Decide to try to take it in Monday, but they say they are too busy.
Tuesday morning drop off the car.
Call me at 12.
Tell me that their records indicate the car originally came in with an error code. P056X
I inform them that the car didn’t have any error codes and no check engine light when it was brought in. They tell me that possibly they scanned it and found the code after they preformed the initial work.
They tell me that since it is emission related that I should take it to the dealership. I tell them when I took the car in it did not have these problems.
I tell them that I know the emission canister is next to the fuel take near the fuel filter and it should have been removed to replace the fuel filter. And the code its throwing now is a P0440
They say, uhh well ill talk to the mechanic.

its not the cars fault, its the repair shops fault. If a mecanic fucks up a jap car its going to get fucked up just as well.
I would drive with the light on, but due to emissions being part of inspections, it wont pass, and since i dont want to pay a 250 dollar fine, or get tickets it needs to get fixed...shortly. 7/25/2006 2:59:20 PM |
