winamp & winrar are the tops in their category - as long as you are using the latest versions

Everything is freeware except for Stardock's suite:

Foxit: small (<1 MB) and quick PDF reader for those sick of the slow and sluggish Adobe Acrobat (~65 MB)

Xfire: IM client for PC gamers

DesktopX 3.1: I use this guy for widgets at wincustomize.com

WindowBlinds 5.1: Skins at wincustomize.com

IconPackager: Icons at wincustomize.com

^^those 3 are part of stardock's little suite

Zone Alarm: A complete firewall unlike Windows Firewall

AdAware:

Stickies for Windows: Post it notes on your desktop! Without having to dl some widget manager! It's only ~150 KB. Really simple. Comes with no crap. http://finiteloop.org/~btaylor/software/stickies/

Tugzip: Better than winrar and free

Any utility at Sysinternals.com. Includes an amazing task manager that blows the one Windows has away and an autorun utility that shows everything that runs at startup, where, and a description. All are just a bunch of small .exe's.

Media Monkey: Does everything for your music media. Go to the website and see the details.

winamp is incredibly bulky with terrible memory leaks. if you leave it running for a few days it will balloon to over 200mb at idle. if winamp 2.9x had the playback quality of 5.x, I'd be happy. I still use winamp though. I have a g15 keyboard and that's the best supported player
