It randomly froze last night, and now when it is rebooted it will freeze shortly after windows starts and all the start up programs start up.

however it will start in safe mode.

i was able to try everything the help program suggested with start up problems, and not one thing made a difference.

the last thing to try is to load the recovery cd and start a new.

is this a good idea, or is it possible there is another problem?

You can boot to safe mode? Have you tried selecting "Use last known good configuration (or something similar)" instead? Installed any new drivers between the time it was working and the time it stopped? If so, boot to safe mode and uninstall them.

Actually you didn't say. I have no idea what windows told you to do.

Have you scanned your computer for viruses, spyware, etc. while in safe mode? What is the nature of the freezing behavior? Does the display just freeze? What does your event log say?

Actually if you don't have major reservations about a reformat I'd say just do it.

i ran virus and spam scans and came up with nothing.
it freezes right after start up items are booted. the desktop looks normal, the mouse just wont move and the keyboard doesnt work. just craps out.

and how do i check the event log?

Under safe mode (obviously)...

Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer

I'd look for errors under the Application and System tabs.

id pull your data off and reinstall windows. its the easiest solution.

oh, and i assume you saw this:
Quote :
"Based on the error and your discovery of the yellow exclamation next to the 1394 port, I think it is safe to say that is the problem.

This probably will just make the computer freeze as well, but I would still give it a shot first because it is easier, and quick to find out. But I would get the drivers for that 1394 port from the manufacturer and then in device manager try to go in the properties and update them. If that fixes it, then you got lucky and it was a corrupt driver.

However, if I had to guess it's a hardware problem. If the prior does not work, I would take apart the lap top and see if you can take out the 1394 part, either removing the board if it's on a socket connection or undo the ribbon if it uses that. If it is permantly attached to the main board, then that's the real bad news. You will probably have to send the laptop back to the manufacturer for servers, tell them the all the steps you've done to narrow down that it is a problem with that port and that you need it replaced.

Update us on how this goes."
