Thinking about getting a new laptop...was wondering if Dell was the way to go or should I try a company called intrex. The sell ACER and I've heard good things about those...any input would be appreciated.

get either the ferrari laptop (acer) or the lamborghini laptop (asus). both come with high-end specs, carbon fibre bodies, and are gorgeous.

I own an Acer (typing on it right now) and I can say both of those laptops are overpriced as HELL, a COMPLETE waste of money.

Acer's don't have very good support at all, I would go with the Dell.

I got all of this with an intel core duo (1.66 GHz) from HP for around $900

How about Lenovo...that's what my sis ended up getting for college *That's why I started the thread* and got a perdy good deal off of CDW---random but Ended up w/ a Duo, 512DDRII, 80Gb HDD, and DVD/CDRW...for about $900...I thought it was a great buy...am I wrong?

what kind of video card? Similar Dells go for 500ish with integrated video.

Lenovo makes really nice laptops though, they bought out IBM's laptop division.

DO NOT BUY A COMPAQ LAPTOP.

I do however recommend HP laptops. We had 3 HP laptops in our apartment, and everybody loved them for their usability and value. Any issues I had were resolved by HP in a pretty fast and convienent manner. I debated with getting a dell 700m at the time, Im really glad I got the HP with more stuff for cheaper.

In the end, if its a quality name brand, just go with the best deal that you can get. You dont seem like somebody who is really into the technological aspect of things anyway. Lenovas are awesome too.

so many uneducated opinions formed of anecdotal experience. everyone mentioning the whole dell battery issue as a reason not to buy a dell is an idiot. there have been like ~6 known occurances of this in 4.1 million sold. dell's even manning up and giving out free replacements to all 4.1 million users who make a claim. do you see sony recalling their laptops that more than likely use the exact same batteries?

the order of quality I've had repeatedly reaffirm in 1st hand experience (I handle close to 800 different laptops per year) is fairly close to this

ibm/lenovo (X and T series, the R is bargain basement and the Z is suspect as its made in china) and apple powerbook, newer dells (all the machines that have that white trimmed case, you can probably include from like the 600m on, but while they've proven reliable are still poorly built), toshiba (especially the tough books which I'd say is on par with an ibm/lenovo), then its just a crap shoot of random models being nice but most everything else from everyone is varying degrees of shitty. I keep hearing of acer of being "decent" but they really overprice their "decent" machines to the point of very few people buying them new. I've seen 4 or 5 first hand ones and while they all functioned and were really thin, I couldn't see anything that warranted the money they're charging for them.

I'm goin w/ Noen on the Acer thing. Typing on one right now that I've had since February.

Core Duo 1.66 (one of the first core duo lappys)
2 g ram
120 gig HD
ATI x1400 (handles anything you need and will even play most games decently)
dvd burner, wireless, etc..

**Not to mention that unlike the MacBook Pros (my other consideration at the time) - you can easily replace this Core Duo proc w/ a Core2Duo (Merom) proc. So, say in 2 years, I can get a nice speed bump on the cheap.**

Agreed on the support though - they continually get horrible support ratings. I've gotten all the support I've needed from the acer forums on notebookreview.com. First thing I did was rebuild this thing from scratch, all the drivers were easily found..zero problems so far.

For a grand less than the MacBook, it was a great buy at the time.
