I know there was a simlar thread before but I was just bored...

Boston College.....Holland (Pretty decent at one time but never fully achieved greatness)

Clemson............Switzerland (Always tough to play at home but lack the drive for winning as much elsewhere)

Duke...............England (Small and distant from bigtime expectations/letdowns in anything but its primary sport/tradition (navy/basketball))

Florida State......Spain (controls its domain in an impressive way but has to share its peninsula with another longtime rival/power)

Georgia Tech.......Denmark (was once a large and formidable empire but decades/centuries on the backburner only make it a shadow of its former self)

Maryland...........Romania (The only representative from the poorer eastern part of Europe. Not much else to say except watch for pick-pockets)

Miami..............Portugal (blood rival to its peninsula sharing neighbor. A major nuisance because nobody understands why a small place could have such a successful past)

North Carolina.....France (Snoody and bitter. Self proclaimed center of class, sophistication and history but with a past full of famous defeats, dubious victories and numerous humiliating experiences at the hands of its hated enemy across the English Channel/or 20 minutes away)

NC State...........Italy (Once, this was the center of the most influential empire and the reason why Europe is as civilized and advanced the way it is today. Its early visions of civilization (Everett Case in ACC's creation) with infrastructure (Dixie Classic) brought Europe out of the stone age but created a vaccume when it couldn't sustain itself as the region's cohesive power. Still looked upon with reverence, although later rivalries betwen England and France took the stage in the last millenium. Also the center of fashion, motivation and loyalty in the region. (Amato, Valvano, Cowher, Lowe )

Virginia ..........Austria (Once a pretty strong force to be reckoned with but eventually overshadowed as its unified neighbor (VT/Germany) took the front stage as the economic/military leader of the Germanic world. Still snoody and nostalgic about their illustrious past but must serve as second fiddle to their neighbor while remaining harmless)

Virginia Tech......Germany (Read above. Once, this was a band of militant clans who were never conquered/overtook by the influences of early civilization and always maintained control over their territory (Italy/NCSU/ACC) but in short time, worked its way into the region as a force that nobody would ever forget. (Unified Germany entering 20th century/VA Tech entering ACC))

Wake Forest........Ireland (Fiesty little bastards with alot of guts and heart but just too small and too late to become a bigtime rival to anyone. Hard to build an island nation/empire when the only other small island nation jumped first at the opportunity)

haha, so do you go on there and other message boards with names that seem like they're people from other schools and bash the heels, and promote the pack whenever there's a thread permitting such. if so good job.

I remember reading that a VT basketball player was quoted as calling the Tar Holes of the dean dome a "wine and cheese crowd," which is more reason to draw the analogy between UNC-CH and France.

You spent a lot of time on all of that but....

You are correct on just about everyone.

I like Miami/FSU being compared to Portugal/Spain.

Great comparisons man! I also think the FSU-Miami one is absolutely perfect. However, I don't like the Maryland comparison all that much, so here is a different one you can use at no charge

Maryland...........Russia (In the past, has been capable of great accomplishments, but the Incompetence (Gorbachev/Wade) and alcoholism (Yeltsin/Williams) of its leadership has left it in a state of depression. Also feels bitter and ostracized from the current powers of the region (European Union/Big 4) and complain constantly about their situation).

I'm trying to do a comparison between the former Soviet states and the Big East but I know very little about countries like Moldova and Tajikistan

except carolina won the ncaa championship last year. you act like they are pretenders. saying all of their victories are "dubious" sounds even more bitter.

Big East schools compared to former Soviet states

Providence, St. Johns, Seton Hall,DePaul,Marquette,'Nova..........Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania (these are countries with no political power/influence except for natural resources, location and infrastructure. (Good basketball but not much else) Lucky to be able to trade with West/Compete in non-conference schedule against ACC schools

Rutgers.....................Moldova (Sandwiched between Ukraine and Romania, this country/school must scrap for the bottom while playing second fiddle to the bigger conference/regional nations in the area. Location is a huge negative for these people. It has had some history/gained independence/has a football and basketball team/ but otherwise unknown anywhere except for Eastern Europe/Big East.

South Florida...............Tajikistan (One of the many "Stans" in the former Soviet empire. Leaves most people thinking "WTF" when seeing this name associated with Eastern Europe/Big East. Up and coming football program/immigration giant

West Virginia.....................Ukraine (Large fanbase/population in this league/region which made up a large part of the former Soviet and new BE tradition and influence. A little less sophisticated than its Russian neighbor but still a force within its own domain.)

Syracuse.....................Poland (Always a promising star with a "bright" future but always the first to get trounced byan out-of-conference foe. Ran much like a puppet in old regime and milked for all of its traditional worth. Still somewhat potent but poor nevertheless.)

Louisville.....................Uzbekistan (Another WTF school that doesn't fit into the normal mold of Big East or Eastern European culture. Old tradition and regional power but nothing more than an overhyped mid-major)

Georgetown/Cincy.................Belarus(Somewhat more class, sophistication and history than its poor neighbors with a more promising economic future. Strong in some things, weak in most.)

Pitt................Bulgaria(Wish they had the size and influence to be Turkey/ND but always considered a former puppet of the BE regime)

Notre Dame........Turkey ( Never quite taken over by the BE or Soviet Union but always influenced by them/and the other way around. Once, this was the seat of a great empire. Even though that empire is long gone, its publicity and culture make it more European/ACC than any of its Eastern neighbors. Although it has remained independent for years, it would love to benifit from a BCS conference or European union (EU))

Sure, France has had a number of victories and have ruled most of the continent before but they also lost out (Napolean/Moscow, Waterloo,Tralfagar) Two of those three defeats were orchestrated or won by the English.

France has been tied to its regional roots, much like UNC has been while many kids know of Duke as a major basketball school (and don't know what state it is located in)

I understand how France lost out. I don't understand what UNC has lost because of Duke. France is a pretty muted country these days. UNC is still very much a force to be reckoned with.

^^they are on the security council, so not really

i think italy is very accurate for us. italians are loud, obnoxious, prone to violence and shady behavior, and generally make more noise than they really should be making about their accomplishments.

of course, they actually won the world cup this year, as well. we won....the meinekie bowl?

yeah the security council for the rest of time. it's not like they have to fight to maintain that status. unc has to actually go out and win games.

I've always heard Wake called Switzerland...ie State fans hate them less than they hate Duke and UNC...UNC fans hate them less than they hate Duke and State...Duke fans hate them less than they hate State and UNC
