Fight between the #8 heavyweight fighter in the world Samuel "The Nigerian Nightmare" Peter and the #6 heavyweight fighter in the world James "Lights Out" Toney
Samuel Peter is gonna knock Toney's lights out
winner should face the winner of the #4 ranked Hasim Rahman vs. #15 Oleg Maskaev fight (August 12)
then #2 Vlad Klitschko fights #11 Shannon Briggs on November 11
the winner of the Vlad/Briggs fight should fight the winner of the Peter/Toney/Rahman/Maskaev bouts to determine the true heavyweight champion of the world now that official #1 ranked fighter Vitali Klitschko is most likely retired 8/1/2006 11:33:24 AM |

Toney in his last two title shots has a win, which was stripped away after a positive steroid test, and a draw when he came in looking like a black Stay Puff Marshmellow Man. Rahman wasn't impressive but still won and yet Toney was gifted a draw. Peter should win this one if he comes in with energy. On the other side, if Toney actually realizes this is his last shot (I don't know if his ego will allow that) he is slick enough and a skilled enough boxer to frustrate Peter and win a lopsided fight (10 rounds to 2 wouldn't shock me if he's actually on his game). Its not a knock on Peter, but when Toney is on, he is just that polished and Peter is still a little raw. However, for him to really be on, he'd have to drop about 40 pounds.
Now Oleg Maskeaev and Shannon Briggs gets title shots (who has either really beaten to earn anything?) I'd much rather see one of these guys give Calvin Brock a shot. His last fight was horrible but then again, it was outdoors in Vegas when it was about 110. Still not sure who thought that would be a good idea. I'm also interested in seeing what will become of Nikolay Valuev. I have yet to be able to get a tape of him, but with his size, and a little skill, he could be completely dominant given the right chances. Not to mention Serguei Lyakhovich has to make his first defense, and Lamon Brewster plans on coming back when his eye heals.
It has lots of potential to be interesting again, but that is all assuming that the powers that be allow some of the top guys to get in the ring with each other. I think everyone has had enough of having 4 guys claiming to be champ just taking easy paydays. Maybe with 3 new champs though, some of that will finally change. 8/1/2006 2:32:34 PM |

I wanted to see Peter fight Chris Byrd myself
Toney definitely has the mental edge / ring experience over Peter but Peter has looked pretty good in all of his fights, even the decision loss to Vlad
the Peter fight was going to be this Saturday but they pushed it back to September 2 8/1/2006 4:46:09 PM |

i'm not the only one that thinks Samuel Peter has what it takes to be that guy
maybe not as many first round knockouts but he definitely hits as hard as anybody and has his head on a lot straighter than Tyson does nowadays, remindming me of the more focused Tyson before Damato's death...I mean Tyson would knock somebody the fuck out in the 1st round then go over and make sure they were OK and help him up with a hug 8/1/2006 5:02:02 PM |

^yea thats the thing i really miss about Tyson, he had class even if he was a little over-anxious to help he aint know much better he was a young kid 8/1/2006 5:29:37 PM |

Damato's death was the beginning of the end for Tyson even though he won his next 15 or 20 fights or so fights after his death
but Peter has his head on right...I believe he is a devout Christian and is married...regardless of your politics or spiritual opinions, he seems capable of dealing with some of the adversities of the spotlight and power associated with being a top heavyweight fighter 8/1/2006 5:50:16 PM |

I think that he has a chance to be that guy. That being said, he has a long way to go. I don't think many people are going to question his power at this point, but his trainers need to teach him to be more flexible. The lack of him being a finished product were exposed against Klitschko. Wlad took away that big lead hook and picked him apart for much of the fight. The Toney fight will say a lot about how much he has learned since that match.
As for Toney being as crazy as Tyson, there is no doubt that he is no where near that level. He talks like he's out of his mind, but much of it is just an attempt to get into the heads of the people he's fighting. Tyson at this point is little more than a side show act who would be locked away somewhere if it wasn't for his name and the fact that he can still make money for people. Its kind of sad really because he could have been one of the best ever regardless of weigh class had Damato lived a little longer. 8/2/2006 11:25:01 AM |

Vlad definitely exposed Peter's weaknesses...but it was mostly Vlad using his 6'7" frame to send long jabs at Peter, and when Peter would get close, Klitschko would turn into Clutchko and just grab him
Vlad did nail him with a few solid shots but only one even seemed to phase Peter...he can take a shot 8/2/2006 11:32:40 AM |

Until this date gets here there is actually a fight that has a lot of potential to be decent on HBO this evening. Ike Quartey and Vernon Forrest are in what is basically a title eliminator. Both are former champs who had been away from the game for awhile (Quartey went back to Africa to live off his money before getting the urge to get back in, Forrest has had 4 operations on his arm while away) so its no telling really what we'll get. 8/5/2006 9:42:04 AM |

Calvin Brock (another Top 10 heavyweight) will be fighting at the Greenville Convention Center later in August.

Yeah, he's from Charlotte and taking a tune up while trying to get a deal worked out for a title fight in early '07. Its nice to see that he's willing to try to bring at least a marginally decent event back to his home state. Although he'll probably be fighting a no body. 8/7/2006 12:14:31 PM |

I like and support Brock just because he is a local fighter but he seems to bland to ever be a superstar on a wide scale 8/7/2006 12:23:36 PM |

could've gone either way...but I'm glad they gave the win to the one fighter who actually dazed the other one a few times...Toney might've landed more punches but none of them hurt Peter
still...fights like that should get extended until somebody gets knocked out 9/3/2006 12:56:37 PM |
