I have a 99 ford ranger pickup (Automatic, less then 80,000 miles), that i'm having some transmission problems with. It will not shift into 3rd/Drive and will not go over 40. The speedometer (spelling?) is not working either. Does anyone know of any good transmission shops around the raleigh area? Anyone know anything about what could have caused this or could help me out?
Thanks,
Cliff

yeah, i know what caused it. You have a fucking pinto transmission connected to a v6 engine, installed in a truck. guaranteed to fail from the get go. Rose Brothers and the transmission shop off Person st, just past krispy kreme behind the little shopping center are supposedly the two best in raleigh.

I don't think it is the transmission. Since the speedo doesn't work, it is likely something wrong with the speed sensor (or PSOM if they still used those in 99).

have you ever replaced the filter and flushed the fluid?

fix the problem with the speedo, the transmission will likely begin to shift again without doing anything else. A fluid change is a good idea, but more than likely has nothing to do with not shifting.

That is a good point...the truck does have an electronic vehicle speed sensor (does it take the place of what is traditionally the speedo gear?).

The speed sensor is on the top of the rear differential housing. It's used for the speedo, the computer, and ABS.

yeah, its a hall effect with a ring on the output shaft, they got rid of the worm gear sensor like the early 90's ones
