I need someone who is good with CAD to make me a .stl file of Julius Hodge. I want to get a 3D printout made. If anyone could help that would be great....preferably this picture

make sure the NC State letters and numbers will be sticking out some because the printout will be all in one color and I want them to be visible.

this is not going to happen. CAD programs are used for mechanical parts and architectural design. You would be better off finding someone to do this in something like poser and seeing if there is a way to convert it so that it can be printed. I just looked it up and seems that you can export from Poser to an .stl file. That would be your best bet as far as computer modeling goes.

Do you have access to a 3-D printer?

Or find somone to sculpt it. You'd probably get a better likeness that way.

what exactly are your intentions for the final product?

Is there any kind of time frame you need this in?

I think there are two 3d printers in Brooks. I don't know squat about them, but I hear they're expensive to use. They are open to any student capable of using them.

there are two 3d printers in brooks. the zcorp printer prints with starch and sugar water, would cost you probably 20 bucks for a 3d printout at like 4x6"

the other one is an abs printer, it will cost you probably 50 bucks for a 5x7" size.

Someone could fake the 3d perspective of that photo using illustrator and rhinoceros or studiotools in a couple of hours or so. wouldnt really be too hard

1. using a CAD program for this is stupid/unefficient. (I understand you didn't know that, but I wanted to make it clear)
2. what are your intentions for the final print out? Perhaps a 3D printout isn't the best option and we can suggest an alternative.
3. How big do you want it?
4. Are you willing to pay for this and how much?
5. What kind of 3-D printer is it? I've only used the kind that uses cornstarch and a modified inkjet head, they work well and you can print parts to put together, but they need to be injected with glue or inventually the crumble. Can you do this yourself? It's not difficult, but do you know how to do it?

^^ It was kindof just an idea I wanted to try because of the printer at work. Its the same printer found here http://www.printapart.com. If its too expensive or time consuming then its not worth it but I just had the idea to try it. Are there any programs I can get for not too much that I can play around with and make my own file and then convert to an stl? Thanks

^ that's true, a lot of programs come with trial periods of 14 days or so. Of course that doesn't leave much time for actually learning how to effectively use the software.

there's probably not any software capable of this that you could actually buy for less than a couple hundred.

Even then to get an actual likeness of Julius would be difficult. If you just want to play around with the printer I would recommend something much more geometric in form. Something like the University seal would be very easy in solidworks or autocad. As would the Belltower. For a figure, like a person or an animal, I would use Poser probably, but to get a good likeness to an actual person would be difficult.

probably the easiest thing to do is to take a jpg/gif/bmp and convert it to a dxf and do some sort of extrusion in the Magics program that we have at work (this is Andrew by the way). I'll track you down a good resolution image and give it a quick whirl. I can tell you if it will look halfway decent in about 2 seconds once I get back to my computer and Magics. It wouldn't be a true 3-D scuplture, just an extruded 2-D image....anyone got any high/semi high resolution pictures of Hodge? Say at least 1600x1200 or 1280x1024?
