What a fucking joke - no major conference football team should have to give away tickets in an attempt to boost their attendance. Plus you can see Dale Jarrett's race car
Quote : | " Duke offering freebies Ticket giveaways in place for opener
The Duke athletics department wants to create more Duke football fans. How badly? Badly enough to give away free tickets to the opening game at Wallace Wade Stadium.
Duke is in the process of sending out vouchers good for a ticket to the game against Richmond on Sept. 2.
"Essentially the spirit of this is 'Try Duke football on us,' " Duke assistant athletics director Jon Jackson said. "Come to a game. Hopefully you'll enjoy it and want to come back."
Wallace Wade seats 33,941. Attendance for home football games at Duke has averaged 20,796 since 2000.
Citing departmental policy, Jackson declined to say how many vouchers were issued.
What makes this ticket promotion different from others Duke has used in the past for football is the scale of the effort and the intent behind it.
First, Duke is reaching out to a handful of specific groups -- Duke alumni in North Carolina, South Carolina and southern Virginia; Duke employees; and local businesses and community groups such as the Durham Independent Schools District and Durham police and fire departments.
By color-coding the vouchers for each group, then tracking them when they come back to Duke, the school will be able to see which group is most responsive.
"We'll be able to do a better job of tracking what works, and that was part of the thought that went into it," Jackson said. "First and foremost, we want people in the building, but the data will be very useful moving forward."
Jackson said that Duke hasn't set a goal for how many people it would like to see use the vouchers.
"We haven't put any numbers on it because we haven't done anything on this scale since I've been here," Jackson said.
Will Duke use the information to use a similar promotion for other sports?
"I think that's a good question," Jackson said. "We have to see what the response is. It'll probably take a little while to get the information back. But this isn't something that we want to do every single game."
Duke is putting some additional effort into the Richmond game with a number of NASCAR-themed events and giveaways.
Dale Jarrett's Ford race car will be on display at the game. UPS is backing that promotion and will also provide fireworks at halftime. Carolina Ford also will display two 2007 non-race model cars.
At the Jarrett car, fans can sign up for different giveaways. Prizes include two tickets with parking to four different races -- in Charlotte, which includes a Scott Riggs autographed prize pack; in Atlanta; in Richmond with a Gatorade prize pack; and one other track to be determined.
"We're excited about it," Jackson said. "If nothing else, we'll get some useful ideas as to what works. This is a new endeavor. Hopefully we'll get people excited about Duke football."

I don't know why everyone bashes Duke football. They've only been bad recently, and most of us are young enough to where we don't remember DUKE football.
Duke has quite a few ACC championships under their belt in football. Also, they went to a couple bowl games in the 80's and 90's. 8/10/2006 1:20:20 AM |

^ Their last championship was in 1989 (sadly, the most recent of the Little Four, but it was still 17 years ago). There were 8 teams in the conference then. That was then and this is now.
Here are their conference records in the modern era of ACC football (when Florida State joined):
1992: 0-8 1993: 2-6 1994: 5-3 1995: 1-7 1996: 0-8 1997: 0-8 1998: 2-6 1999: 3-5 2000: 0-8 2001: 0-8 2002: 0-8 2003: 2-6 2004: 1-7 2005: 0-8
Total: 16-96, take out their fluke year and they're 11-93. NC State actually has a 10-game winning streak against them streaking back to 1993!

The sooner they are jettisoned to C-USA the better.

actually had this discussion the other night about whether or not Duke would ever drop the football team or try to move the football team to another conference while remaining in the ACC for basketball.
I just can't see it happening. I think they will stay put (and sucky) simply on the strength of Coach K and the basketball team. Would look bad for the league for them to bolt and would look bad for the school to drop the football team. 8/10/2006 12:36:19 PM |

as long as they stay for basketball i would have to imagine that it would only make acc football look better. not only are they bad, but they can't draw a crowd and play in a stadium that is on par with a large highschool.8/10/2006 1:02:52 PM |

What large high school has an average attendance of 20,000? 8/10/2006 2:49:52 PM |
Flyin Ryan All American 8224 Posts user info edit post |
^ Some Texas high schools.
Their attendance is propped up in that they play schools that can boost their numbers by travelling fans (VT, UNC, NC State, UVa and Wake somewhat). I'm waiting for Duke to host North Carolina Central (going up to I-AA in 2009 I think), and there are more NC Central fans at Wallace-Wade than Duke fans. They must be worried about the NCAA rule where I-A teams have to average 15000 over a season or risk demotion to I-AA. Although this rule was designed for some of the never-will-bes and I doubt Duke has much to worry about, the fact they only average 20k must be a cause of concern. And hence the free tickets for Richmond. When Duke played VMI last year, I think they only got an attendance of 10k.
I've always wondered about maybe they drop football in say the next 10 years and keep basketball in the ACC. That would cause an ACC problem though where they got to 12 teams for a conference championship game, but would have 12 b-ball teams and 11 football teams. I'm sure they get a nice paycheck from the BCS though that keeps them in...

^ Duke brings the ACC mad basketball money. If it was viable for both Duke due to the costs of BCS-level football and for the ACC to get in a better team for marketing and viewership reasons, the ACC would let it go without a hitch. The ACC would not get rid of one of their top two basketball teams. 8/10/2006 3:04:47 PM |

Exactly. Louisville considered dropping football before my father was there. Then they started to win and started to fill the stadium.
Miami came ONE VOTE SHORT of dropping its football program in 1979 because they were lightweights and it was a money drain on the University. Two year later under coach Howard Schlenberger and a QB Jim Kelly, they beat Viginia Tech in the Peach Bowl. In 1983, Miami wins a national championship... and the rest is history.8/10/2006 4:05:14 PM |

Modern Era:
1992: 6-2 1993: 4-4 1994: 6-2 1995: 2-6 1996: 3-5 1997: 3-5 1998: 5-3 1999: 3-5 2000: 4-4 2001: 4-4 2002: 5-3 2003: 4-4 2004: 3-5 2005: 3-5
Total: 55-57
(conference opponents this timeframe)
vs. Boston College: 0-1 vs. Clemson: 6-8 vs. Duke: 11-1 vs. Florida State: 4-10 vs. Georgia Tech: 4-10 vs. Maryland: 9-5 vs. Miami: 0-1 vs. North Carolina: 4-10 vs. Virginia: 6-6 vs. Virginia Tech: 1-1 vs. Wake Forest: 10-4
I agree on your premise. But you cannot compare a team that goes around 4-4 every year pretty much to a team that has 16 wins in 14 years.
Take a long term view to this. At the start of the next decade, can you see Duke in the middle of the ACC finishing 4-4 a few seasons in a row?8/11/2006 12:22:30 AM |

funny how a couple of years back there was more people in attendance for the first PRACTICE or MIDNIGHT MADNESS (or whatever they call it there) at Duke then there was at the football GAME that previous afternoon.
One of my ENG Prof had season tickets to duke football, always joked about how no matter where your assigned ticket seats were you could basically sit where ever you wanted and that it was like going to a movie that has been out for a month in the theatres at 10 oclock at night, there is no one sitting anywhere near you once you get past the first 10 or so rows.
I doubt Duke would ever send their football to another conference or division. Duke has too much pride to actaully admit they are inferior in football to the rest of the conference and step down. I think that they are on their way up, I like their new coach just given the story of how he became coach. 8/11/2006 4:05:55 AM |

I won't call myself a Duke football fan although I did grow up worshiping Blue Devils basketball, but there is a reason for it. How can you support a football program with only 6-7,000(?) students. Granted they do pay a shitload but that's b/c the school is nice. I think they should just stay here as the crap football team and live to beat up on the tarholes since all they care about is basketball too.
