why do terrorists at least the ones that threaten the US, always target airplanes? With security as tight as it is you would think they would try something else 8/10/2006 1:03:06 PM |

scope. the media runs stories about plane crashes non-stop while tons more people die each day from automobile accidents. most upper-middle class white people do not use public transportation so you're only doing the government a favor by blowing up trains. that was a joke. 8/10/2006 1:06:53 PM |

I also think the thought of dying on a plane is particularily chilling since you are tens of thousands feet up in the air and completely helpless. 8/10/2006 1:08:37 PM |

i would say because airplanes are, in a simple sense, flying fuel tanks that have permission to come into the country...fairly convenient for terrorists who want to come into the country and blow stuff up 8/10/2006 1:13:40 PM |

And once the terrorists take control of the plane, the only thing the US gov't can do is shoot it out of the air. It's the ultimate lose-lose. 8/10/2006 1:15:50 PM |

id imagine you need a fairly small explosion to get the thing destabilized too. plus theres nowhere for ppl to run. 8/10/2006 1:50:32 PM |

killing 300 people in one pop is noteworthy 8/10/2006 6:29:07 PM |

Americans have become numb to the killing of troops, but when a plane full of civilians gets murdered it unnumbs them. Using a plane adds to the shock and awe. Also, that dont really have any other way, unless they do a Timothy McVeigh.

ROMAN OFFICER: Oh. Crucifixion is such a senseless waste of human life, isn't it?
JAILER'S ASSISTANT: not with these bastards, sir. Crrrrucifixion's too good for 'em, sir.
ROMAN OFFICER:: I don't think you can say it's too good for them. It's-- it's very nasty.
JAILER'S ASSISTANT: Well, it's not as nasty as something I just thought up, sir.

Oh fuck off.
You think it's hard fucking work being more creative than blowing up or crashing international flights?
We're fortunate these guys haven't the vaguest conception of our society or how it operates, otherwise we might have seen far worse shit happen. 8/10/2006 7:50:37 PM |

Because they're too stupid to figure out how to sink a cruise ship...which is pretty hard to pull off anyway
Also, planes offer people in a confined space and gaurantee a headcount equal to all the people on board. This plan, had it gone off, would have ground global aviation to a halt indefinitely and that would been the most MILD outcome. 8/10/2006 10:16:57 PM |

One last note. The goal of terrorists is to scare us into wanting our administration to change its policy, at least in political theory. Planes crashing into the ground or buildings in a fiery display is awfully scary. 8/10/2006 10:34:48 PM |

I hope we can bring electronics on the plane again. Having a laptop is invaluable on long flights. 8/11/2006 12:45:06 AM |

They used to print things for long flights.
Can't remember what they're called, but they're rectangular-shaped, light-weight, and have pages...

So are the ways our government responds to them.

Figure of speech. I wrote it how I say it which is more like an innocuous "oh come on." Didn't mean any offense.

I'm not saying planes are a particularly stupid idea as far as the effect is concerned, it just seems like an unnecessarily complex way to get that effect.
Mind, I'm not going to publicly go into details about other ideas that would be far easier to carry out and inflict a similar body count. It's just that if I can imagine ways, I'm sure others can, too.8/11/2006 11:56:25 AM |
