1. Should the address on the license be changed everytime you change your apartment/address? If yes, procedure to do that online?
2. Does the registration address have to match that on your drivers license?
3. Is it alright to use a friend's address for registration/renewal/etc. if you're not sure about the address you're going to keep in the coming days?
4. If the above is allowed, would the postal service deliver bills to their place, or would they need some notification? Could I still pay for renewal/taxes online? 8/11/2006 3:27:09 PM |

The reason I ask this is that I am in another state right now, and am not sure how long I am going to be here. So I don't want to register everything here and then re-register everything elsewhere.
So if I change the address on my license online, I assume they'd only accept NC addresses. I am not sure how long before I get back to NC. I tried to search, but this thing is more complicated than filing a 1040. 8/11/2006 3:45:20 PM |

Of course you are not able to change your address to out of state if you move 8/11/2006 3:46:32 PM |

that's why my question about giving an interim address in NC.
I have already forwarded all my mails to my friends' address, but got an email from Geico saying they were unable to deliver.
My registration is due for renewal end of next month, and I wanna check if it's possible to renew it for NC again.
Same for my license. As of now it has the NC address on it. 8/11/2006 3:49:06 PM |

Maybe Geico can't forward (I know banks don't forward) just change your address to his address. Claim his place as your permanent address. 8/11/2006 3:58:29 PM |

oh I can just change the Geico mailing address. That's no problem. But this got me thinking.
Since registration is due next month and I am not sure where I am gonna be living, what's the most hassle-free and cheapest way to have everything in order. Does no one else have this issue? 8/11/2006 4:00:52 PM |

Just use his address. No one else has to ask the internet about simple stuff like this, no. 8/11/2006 4:01:48 PM |

dude, it might be simple, but I am not familiar with the law and hence I am asking.
So you think I should just renew my registration, license, and insurance on his address, and then ask him to forward me my car tax bill to be paid online? 8/11/2006 4:03:25 PM |

hahaha, why would the postal service need notification?
and if you don't know where you're gonna be, i would think its ok to register your car to a friend's address (if you change the info when you find it out). i mean, as long as you're gonna be in the state where you are registering it. otherwise it makes no sense. 8/11/2006 5:21:10 PM |

I am probably not going to be in the state when the car registration is renewed. 8/11/2006 5:46:05 PM |

When I got pulled, the address on my registration and my license was wrong, but it was in the system that I had moved and since he had my new address, he did not care or ticket me. Also, when taxes on my car were due, they came to the new address and not the old.

1. LOL, my address on my license is still from 7 years ago when I was in High School! I've been pulled only once since then for speeding 10 miles over. But, the cop only gave me a harsh warning and he didn't mention anything about my address.
2. LOL, mine definately doesn't. My address has changed over 12 different times since I got my license. 10 times in college alone (moving from dorm to dorm and apartment to apartment).
3. ROFL, I don't have any friends. [/joke]
4. WTF? Why would they mail bills to your address on your license? All my bills and notices have always come to my new addresses. I even got the notification to renew my license last week at my new address. "Big Brother" keeps a good eye on you. Cue: "Every Breath you Take" by Sting. 8/11/2006 8:05:33 PM |

What state are you in, and are you employed at something other than a temporary job? Most states require you to change your residency if you are working there for longer than something like 30 or 60 days. That said, I spent around $300 becoming a VA resident, and its absolutely not worth it if you're planning on moving back to NC soon. You should be able to change your address to your friend's address on the NCDMV website. I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure that your registration is tied to your drivers licence number so your address will be updated automatically, and I don't know that you get a new card reflecting the change. You can pay most everything online, but you might want to make sure you trust your friend to tell you when a tax bill shows up. I've mailed stuff to myself at all kinds of people's addresses. If your friend is in an apartment complex with a high turnover rate where they list the names on the inside of the mailbox, have him add your name to that card so the mailman doesn't think your someone who doesn't live there anymore. 8/11/2006 8:28:01 PM |
