i know i can go on google but i want to have some SERIOUS lame mans discussion on this topic.
i know its probobly been addressed but tonight after hours of though i've come to one 100% certain conclusion about time travel you will never be able to go back in time and know that you came from the future because nobody has come from the future and proved to us
(ex if i were to go back 2 years ago i'd just be in my exact state i was in 10 years ago. if i was to go back to when i started making this thread i would just be making this thread.)
so if you can go back and don't know would you do the same thing everytime since you don't know you came from the future or anything about the futurue. thus go back in time again and over and over. or would small probobilities in your every day life slightly change all your actions over time until at some point before eternity you decide not to go back in time? that would be how it works i think since you keep going back until you don't decide to go back.
its all in your philosophy how you would think it is. I think time is a thing but if you think each time is an actual place then the possiblilities are endless.
there could be like infinity universes each at a certain instant in time and time travel would just be universe hopping. in this situation you could kill your grandma and it would just erase that one universe.

You wasted your time. Other people a lot smarter than you had this figured out long before you.
Quote : | "(ex if i were to go back 2 years ago i'd just be in my exact state i was in 10 years ago." |
What are you trying to say here? If you go two years into the past, you will be how you were ten years ago? How the hell does that make any sense? I concede that I may have read this wrong.
Quote : | "if i was to go back to when i started making this thread i would just be making this thread.)" |
You're just stating the obvious here. What's your point?
Quote : | "so if you can go back and don't know would you do the same thing everytime since you don't know you came from the future or anything about the futurue, thus go back in time again and over and over? or would small probabilities in your every day life slightly change all your actions over time until at some point before eternity you decide not to go back in time?" |
So you think that you'll keep repeating the act of going back through time until you eventually decide not to go back through time? What proof do you have of this? How did you reach this conclusion? Your theory's too complicated at any rate. Isn't it easier to just say that it's impossible to time travel in reverse?
Quote : | "that would be how it works i think since you keep going back until you don't decide to go back." |
Again, where's your proof that this is what occurs?
Quote : | "its all in your philosophy how you would think it is. I think time is a thing but if you think each time is an actual place then the possiblilities are endless." |
What the hell does "time is a thing" mean? And you think that time might be a "place?" Congratulations, you've just described the fourth dimension.
Quote : | "there could be like infinity universes each at a certain instant in time and time travel would just be universe hopping." |
Kudos to you on your observation of the obvious. This does, of course, assume the "many realities, many universes" theory is correct.
Quote : | "in this situation you could kill your grandma and it would just erase that one universe." |
Killing your grandma "erases" that one universe? Why is it suddenly erased? Wouldn't it make more sense for you to simply "hop" from the universe in which your grandma lives (and consequently you are born) to the universe where she dies (and you are not born)? If there are an infinite number of universes and all you're doing is moving from one to the next, then the universe in which your grandma is alive is not gone, you have simply chosen not to move to it.
And once again I have asserted what a dork I am. 8/12/2006 11:41:24 AM |

anyway, the way you describe it sounds like the butterfly effect, going back and being in that state rather than observing yourself 8/12/2006 1:25:40 PM |
hcnguyen Suspended 4297 Posts user info edit post |
well i do think about the observer mode. we will probobly be able to do that first. looking back in time isnt time travel though.
and umbrella
i dont think time is a place so i think when you go back in time everything is back to how it was at that time, including your knowledge/state of mind. it would be cool but it doesn't make any sense to be able to go back in time and not have your knowedge go back but everything else.
what i was trying to say about he cycle is that if i go back to when i was making this thread i would make this thread again and go back in time again when the time came that i went back in time. i would continue to make this thread and go back to the time i was making this thread until something disrupted me from going back in time again. there was probobly a .0001% chance that my computer crashed while i was making this thread so sometime after going back in time 10,000 times my computer would crash and that would change what i did in the future. i would continue to go back until my actions were altered enough to the point where i don't go back in time again.
i don't agree with the infinate # of universes i was just putting that out there as a possiblility. in that case time would be a place and there would be a different universe for each instant in time.
this would explain deja vu as looking into one of those universes while you're sleep. an ability that we might be able to harness in the future. 8/12/2006 1:36:54 PM |

there was a really good book called something like "time travel in einstein's world" it gave really good analogies to try and understand what time travel would be like
really it was basically saying we won't be able to travel back in time but it's possible to view the past
for instance, an event happening right this minute here on earth, if someone in another galaxy is viewing earth through a telescope, they won't see that event happen for like 400 years or something like that, so thinking of a moment in time, universal throughout the universe, while it happens then, they won't view it at that time, they'll see the "past" 400 years later 8/12/2006 1:40:39 PM |

i haven't read the rest of this thread but...
i always thought time travel was kind of interesting in the fact that in order to do so you would not only have to travel backwards in time, BUT you would also have to travel in space as well...
we all move in the universe, where you are right now is not the same place you were in the past
you travel backwards in time and the earth and all your friends will just ZIP away 8/12/2006 8:37:00 PM |
spöokyjon ℵ 18617 Posts user info edit post |
Your problem is assuming that moving some uncommon way through time would completely unanchor you from space, leaving you at some sort of magical fixed position. 8/12/2006 8:46:47 PM |
nastoute All American 31058 Posts user info edit post |
dude
this is all silliness anyways
there are NO fixed reference positions in space in the first place
i have no clue how time travel would work, all i know is that space is a 4-vector
i assume with backwords time travel, the time coordinate will flow, in a sense more or less, independent of the others
that's it 8/12/2006 8:56:30 PM |

time travel to the future is possible and proven (see NASA's Gravity Probe A), although in very small increments with current technology, not noticible to human observation. For humans to travel into the future any significant amount (more than a second or two) using the only known, practical method (sustained movement at a very fast pace, as close to the speed of light as possible), there will have to be major advances in propulsion technologies.
Note that travelling into the future simply means that a human's frame of reference travels slower than the earth's frame of reference (assuming earth as the baseline, because that's where all the other people are). Therefore, if it takes a person (probably on a spaceship of sorts) exactly 10 earth-years to himself age (judged by a clock onboard the spaceship with him) only 9 years and 364 days, then he has travelled 1 day into the future, but it has taken him nearly 10 years to do so. The only way to get to future time travel as portrayed in the movies or popular sci-fi (i.e. instantaneous travel), then he would have to travel at exactly the speed of light (impossible). At the speed of light, time for him would cease to move, and time on the earth would go on normally. Of course, you would have to count accelleration and decelleration time too, and at a rate that wouldn't kill the person from g-forces would take lifetimes (unless a fanciful anti-gravity device is invented, as envisioned by Arther C. Clark in 3001, so the human body would not be subject to G-forces). 8/12/2006 9:21:56 PM |

no lion has ever chosen to walk around me. therefor, no lions exist" | its not exactly like that. the future goes on forever so you're saying in all of eternity nobody ever decided to come back to our time and prove that they came from the future. maybe most people wouldnt tell anybody that they came from the future but there would be a rare asshole that would want to for whatever reason. in all of the future to eternity no person has chosen to come back to our history keeping period of what? over 1000 years? and told us they were from the future.
thats proof nobody in the future at any point is coming back in time with the knowledge that they are.8/12/2006 11:10:31 PM |
