"t's official -- Harrison Beck has chosen N.C. State to resume his career.

He picked the Wolfpack over about 11 other offers this week, including seven from Division I-A schools, said John Davis, who coached Beck at Countryside High in Clearwater, Fla.

N.C. State recruited him heavily out of high school.

"It's time to move on," Davis said. "

BY STEVEN M. SIPPLE / Lincoln Journal Star

Harrison Beck will resume his football career at North Carolina State.

The former Nebraska backup quarterback could start practicing as soon as this weekend, said John Davis, who coached Beck at Countryside High School in Clearwater, Fla.

“He just wanted to get out there and get started,” Davis said Friday.

Beck, a sophomore, must sit out of games this season per NCAA rules. Because he didn’t redshirt last season at Nebraska, he’ll have three years of playing eligibility starting with the 2007 season.
Harrison Beck, considered one of the top recruits in Nebraska's 2005 recruiting class, left the football team Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, after skipping two practices over the weekend. (AP)

“He still has to prove himself,” Davis said. “Nobody’s going to hand him anything.”

Beck left Nebraska’s preseason camp last weekend without telling coaches or teammates. On Monday, he decided to leave the program for good after an amicable conversation with Husker coach Bill Callahan, Davis said.

Beck’s mother said last week her son was frustrated over the lack of practice repetitions he was receiving behind Nebraska returning starter Zac Taylor.

“I think Harrison’s still a little down over the whole process,” Davis said. “Obviously, he’ll be relieved when he gets on the field.”

Davis reminded Beck that even Taylor came to Nebraska as a transfer.

North Carolina State this season features junior Marcus Stone as the projected starting quarterback. He started the final six games of 2005, leading the Wolfpack to a 5-1 record, including a 14-0 bowl triumph over South Florida.

Behind Stone are sophomore Daniel Evans, true freshman Justin Burke and Ryan Goodman, also a former Husker who’s a standout wrestler at the school.

North Carolina State was among seven Division I-A schools to court Beck this week, Davis said. Beck also received offers from three Division I-AA schools and two junior colleges. Davis declined to name the other schools.

Davis’ son, Jay, is a graduate assistant at North Carolina State. What’s more, Wolfpack offensive coordinator Marc Trestman served in the same capacity for the Oakland Raiders from 2002-03 when Callahan was head coach there.

The Wolfpack pursued Beck hard in high school.

“It’s time to move on,” Davis said."

notable blurb from another article:
Quote :
"Beck was a prep standout at Countryside High School in Clearwater, Fla., and was ranked by Rivals.com as the nation’s No. 3 pro-style quarterback and the 20th-best prospect in the state of Florida. He was among the first players to commit to Nebraska’s 2005 recruiting class, giving his oral commitment in June of 2004. He turned down offers from Florida, Florida State and Miami."

he'll sit next year because DeMarkus Stone will have a winning season

then in '08 he'll only have 2 years left.

better hope he's better than Burke

Stone will have a good season this year, then going into next year Amato will have to decide who the starter is. Stone the senior veteran or Beck with 3 years left. Sounds kinda like last year when Davis was the senior vet and stone was supposed to be this great QB, well maybe not great but anyway. I'm just saying it's probably going to turn into a sticky situation. Move some of these fast QBs to other positions.

so, is there any word on if this guy is any good or not?

I know he was a highly touted recruit going into college but have his skills developed at all? does he learn fast? does he have a good work ethic?

i read he was really good but has a limited work ethic, so we'll see how it works out. hopefully well. i think it'll be good if we actually get an OFFENSIVE LINE.

This sounds fishy, and if this guy is better than Burke, then I think we might have some really fucking good qb's on our hands for the next 4 years...hopefully the coaches know when to bench stone if he starts to suck again this year.

stone was #2 or 3 in his class but we're pretty much a lock to have a good qb next year. too many "good" qbs for them to all be busts. burke stone this guy greco evans. somebody will be good in 07 for sure

^Evans???? He was not highly-touted. The only reason he is on the team is because his dad was an All-American here.

Stone was really about the #10 QB in his class.

well first of all Greco has been gone for like 2 months now, shows how much you keep up, then Evans is terrible...hes so frail he will get demolished.

and thirdly, this topic has already been discussed...check the NC STATE 2007 FOOTBALL RECRUITING thread

yeah this is probably a huge slap in the face to burke. i wouldnt be surprised if he transferred out now.

he ought to have a fair shot to beat out beck though so may the best man win i guess.

Beck didn't go to the same hs Jay went to. Jay went to Clearwater Catholic High School. Beck went to Countryside High, which is a public school. Jay's father left Clearwater Catholic sometime after Jay came to State, and took over at Countryside.

Exactly. These kids are confident football players. Competition will only make these kids sharper and work harder in my mind.. If they wilt at the first sign of competition then we probably don't went them o the field in an ACC game anyway.

Stone was ranked as the #33 quarterback according to scout.com. Rivals.com put him as the #3 dual-threat quarterback and 9th overall of quarterbacks in 2003.

Beck was ranked as the #11 quarterback according to scout.com and the 4th rated pro style quarterback according to rivals.com in 2005.

all i meant is i'm sure that burke wasn't ecstatic when he heard the news. but yes, competition is always a good thing to have.

heck if i was Burke, i would use it to my advantage. find out what he could teach me that could help me become better. light a fire under my ass to become the starter. besides since he has seen actual playing time, he could give him pointers in terms of blocking out the crowd and perhaps reading college defenses.

Toney Baker committed to us with Andre Brown solidly committed, TA still here, bobby washington and Blackman already here, and Reggie Davis to be a junior.

those are the types of players we want, not players that bitch about competition for starting spots.

don't even try to attempt to compare having multiple good RB's to multiple good QB's

you can easily rotate a few good RB's well. how many teams do you know of that successfully pull of QB by committee without fucking up their flow?

Well its a different situation, but considering we're talking about 2 unproven quarterbacks to compete against vs. 4 unproven running backs....all of which were great in high school. Its the same situationfor the depth chart, but different mentality.

QB Competition and QB by committee are two different things.

Having a capable backup and a lot of talent on the roster at the QB position is a great thing.... unless you have someone on there bitching about playing time (Which I'm afraid Beck will bring).

yeah that's my point

you can have RB by committee, so 4 good running backs is easier to manage than 2-3 good quarterbacks is all i'm saying.

nothing wrong with having good backups, but at some point it's just wasted talent

in 2007 Beck will be a RS Sophomore and Burke will likely be a RS Freshman. Even if Beck takes the job, Burke will have a year to start at the very least.

Of course judging by the scrimmage today I think there is a good chance that Beck is going to be the one doing the mop-up duty for Burke.
