Maggiano's has the best tiramisu. I don't even like tiramisu, and I order it everytime I go to there. 8/15/2006 10:38:10 PM |

You need some uncommon type of cheese.
Marscapone?
It's what's stopping me from trying. 8/15/2006 10:58:09 PM |

Harder to extract decent espresso at home than it is to get the mascarpone. 8/15/2006 11:03:35 PM |

^^yeah u got it right, a lot of the ingredients aren't what I have on hand, but I was just wondering if it was worth the effort..

mascarpone isn't that hard to get, nor is it prohibitively expensive, of course it's worth the effort, and even if you end up with something less than 'decent' espresso, it will still be delicious.

I've made a version of it. It did not use lady fingers, but one of my Italian friends still told me it was good. The mascarpone cheese is pretty expensive, too. It's not that hard to make, though, or at least I don't think so. As long as you're not opposed to shelling out for the ingredients. 8/15/2006 11:12:19 PM |

Its actually not that hard to make. But honestly you probably aren't going to make it better than what you can buy for a decent price. Fresh Market has a really good tiramisu that they get from a bakery out of NY, I believe. You can find the same tiramisu served at many restaurants so it is a good deal at Fresh Market for $2.99 each. There is a Fresh Market in Cameron Village, one on Falls of the Neuse, and one in Cary.
My personal favorite is Caffe Luna's tiramisu. 8/15/2006 11:16:01 PM |

I was just thinking of one day (if I ever find a new boo and cook for him) that this would be the desert I made. I love cooking, dont mind shelling for the ingredients, but I want it to be a seemingly easy recipe (easy meaning hard to screw up the taste) 8/15/2006 11:18:03 PM |

Give Giada's recipe a try. I've found her dishes to be the most consistent in taste and usually they aren't very fussy. Defintiely the most dependable Italian food recipe source on Food Network.

Its not that difficult to make if you have a clue what you're doing. In a standard tiramisu, the mascarpone is going to be the most expensive. 8 oz of mascarpone, which is $4-6 by itself, will make a 9x9 pan of it. Cream, egg whites, lady fingers, and cocoa are all relatively cheap. The espresso, and brandy/cognac/chocolate or coffee liqueur are the next most expensive.
Every time i make it, i'll either just make a really strong cup of coffee, or buy a quadruple shot of espresso from some coffee house.

Always get your espresso from a reputable coffee shop, just have them do 4 shots in a foam cup for you to take home. If you go to $tarbuck$ for this, you should be shot on sight. 8/16/2006 11:17:14 AM |
