Does anyone remember Jesse Jackson's "Hymietown" remark circa 1984? I do. If I am not mistaken, the good "Reverend" initially denied the remark; he later admitted it, mouthed some meaningless words, and the whole mess just went away.
Oh, and I almost forgot about former Ku Klux Klan member and current Democrat Senator Robert Byrd's comments from around 2001--and they were televised. He used the unfortunate term "white nigger" twice, I think. Yet, his Klan membership and racial slurs don't seem to be a problem to the liberal media--as long as Byrd's a card-carrying lefty!

For starters, the comparison is silly. Mel Gibson is infinitely more interesting and compelling to the general public than Jesse Jackson and Robert Byrd. So I think you're on the wrong track when you say that Mel Gibsons's racist outburst is getting more attention because of party affiliations. Perhaps party affiliation is a factor though...maybe Gibson running his mouth about stem cells/abortion/religion really annoyed certain people, and they've just been waiting to get back at him. Also media have changed now, dude; you gotta be careful when you're comparing 1984 to 2006--is he really getting more attention?
Anyway, Robert Byrd has taken a lot of shit and has apologized before. My understanding is that he gets the job done for W. Virginia so a lot of people don't give a shit that he's a hardcore racist. And he's old as fuck too, dude. We make allowances for old people. In my opinion, Byrd sucks balls, but I'm not a dirt poor West Virginian either.
As far as the whole Jesse Jackson thing goes, I was born in 1984, but I can still take a stab it:
Quote : | "BridgetSPK: I've always been especially disappointed by the number of black people who are racist/prejudiced against Jewish people because so many Jews were such hardcore civil rights supporters when it wasn't a popular issue to take up for or even discuss." |
http://brentroad.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=422798&page=4#9087499
Society makes allowances for black people when it comes to racism/anti-Semitism because they feel bad for black people and they also think black people are backwards and don't know any better. Perhaps a tad of that was at play with Jesse Jackson? Either way, it's all bullshit.
I'd like to know if there have been any studies/polls/whatever done about blacks/anti-Semitism and whites/anti-Semitism. Anybody have anything to share on the matter?
^I think he's trying to say that those incidents got less attention at the times than Mel Gibson's is getting now. It would be really difficult to guage that though.

^ who says they got less attention? Maybe they did, maybe they didn't - i don't know, i don't remember. But the media was completely different in 1984 anyway. We didn't have 24 hours news, the internet, blogs to stir the pot, etc. Stories were reported about in the newspaper, then mentioned on the Nightly News, then they were basically over. 8/16/2006 10:35:43 PM |

You're right. I thought that's what he was implying, but now that I reread it...maybe he means the media are less forgiving. He's clearly drawing a comparison of some sort though, and it's a pointless comparison.
Even though I'm saying this is a bullshit comparison, I still feel compelled to point out that Jackson's comment was made 22 years ago. The media changed, and society has too. Perhaps we're less forgiving of anti-Semitism than we were then?8/16/2006 10:43:25 PM |

1. ^my elementary school went up to the sixth grade
One kid pulled a knife on a teacher
Another tried to whip a white kid "like the ones the whites used in Roots"
Some of the kids up and left school and walked home after watching that garbage.
Thew bottom line is these movies shouldn't have been shown to kids at that age without proper explanation/discussion before and after AND parental consent.

ANY KIDS who fight and riot like you described above AT THAT AGE have NOT been brought up properly. BY NATURE, kids are NOT that aggressive, vicious, violent, and revengeful AT THAT AGE.

Most of the kids from my part of the county were considered below the poverty level and the entire district was considered to be pretty low academically in the late '80s to mid '90s.
Alot of these kids' parents were in their mid twenties and didn't give a fuck. I remember one parent that came to school and almost beat up my teacher because she didn't want her kid in school.
Teachers, counselors, administrators,etcc... have been trying to implement plans to include parents in educational programs for years. The problem is with the mentality of alot of the parents and the limited authority of teachers in classroom.

for some context, this is what Byrd actually said (when asked about race relations on a FOX news program):
Quote : | "On March 4, 2001, an interview with Tony Snow was aired on FOX News Sunday. In the interview, Byrd was asked about race relations:
"They are much, much better than they've ever been in my lifetime," Byrd said. "I think we talk about race too much. I think those problems are largely behind us ... I just think we talk so much about it that we help to create somewhat of an illusion. I think we try to have good will. My old mom told me, 'Robert, you can't go to heaven if you hate anybody.' We practice that. There are white niggers. I've seen a lot of white niggers in my time. I'm going to use that word. We just need to work together to make our country a better country, and I'd just as soon quit talking about it so much."[11]
Byrd's use of the term "nigger" created immediate controversy, When asked about it, Byrd apologized for the language: " 'I apologize for the characterization I used on this program,' he said. 'The phrase dates back to my boyhood and has no place in today's society. [...] 'In my attempt to articulate strongly held feelings, I may have offended people.' "" |

Before I attempt to address the "points" of your last post, I made a few observations about your initial reply to the topic. First, your ageism is noted in the following comments concerning Byrd: "And he's old as fuck too, dude. We make allowances for old people" (BridgetSPK). At exactly what age does "old as fuck" begin? And concerning your ridiculous "allowances for old people" comment, alert the Simon Wiesenthal Center, we aren't hunting for Nazis anymore! BridgetSPK--in her infinite wisdom--declares that they are too old!
Second, your stereotyping is noted in other comments related to Byrd's constituency: "I'm not a dirt poor West Virginian either" (BridgetSPK). No, you're just a loudmouth who continually takes issue with the wrong issues. Concerning your posts, I'll paraphrase the worldly Tommy Lee: For the most part, your posts are sautéed in wrong sauce.
As to the numbered list in your last post, (1) You DON'T get it, (2) you STILL don't get it, and (3) I have all the E-V-I-D-E-N-C-E that I need. If you bothered to give my positions serious investigation, you would have said evidence, too. 8/17/2006 8:30:27 PM |

We make allowances for old people, and Robert Byrd is very old. Are you denying that?

Stereotyping? Dude, I'm not saying that all West Virginians are dirt poor. I'm saying that I can totally see why people look past Byrd's racism:
1. He's old. We make allowances for old people. 2. He goes to bat for W. Virginia. He is damn good at representing W. Virginia and getting the job done for a very poor state that otherwise might get the shaft.

Once again, BridgetSPK, you're yammering on about God knows what. Only one as deluded as you would wear her lack of understanding as claim to some sort of victory.
If you STILL don't think the mainstream media has a hard-on for liberals, witness the events of just the past few weeks. Senator Joe Biden (D-Delaware) made the following comment on C-SPAN: "You cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I’m not joking." Did you hear any in-depth reporting or outrage about this? Be honest. At any rate, it barely got a mention on the Big Three.
Oh, but there's more! Andrew Young (D) former mayor of Atlanta, former congressman, former UN ambassador, and supposed civil rights activist made what ABC News described only as "racially charged comments" in a suspiciously short report. Hard facts as to what Young said have been hard to come by, but the Anti-Defamation League posted the following on its Web site concerning the comments in question: "Andrew Young's comments that Jewish, Korean and Arab shopkeepers 'ripped off' African-American communities and should be displaced by Wal-Mart, which he REPRESENTED [emphasis added to note past tense], were offensive, hurtful and shameful. That a leader of the civil rights movement and one who knew discrimination firsthand would make such comments, demonstrates that even people of color are not immune from being bigoted, racist and anti-Semitic." Did you hear any in-depth reporting or outrage about this on the Big Three? Be honest. I did not; and I'll wager that I watch--and read--more news than you do.
Now let's turn to the unfortunate comments made by Senator George Allen (R-VA). He referred to an opponent’s campaign worker, S.R. Sidarth, who is of Indian descent, I think, as "Macaca," which is apparently some kind of monkey. Allen’s comments received an entire segment on _Nightline_--complete with knitted brows, pained looks of concern, and disappointed tones by the reporters. And if you will just look at this doofus, Allen, you can probably quickly determine that he doesn't know what in hell “Macaca” means--just as he said. But if you go to CNN.com, you can "(Watch Allen refer to Sidarth as 'Macaca'--2:32)." I searched for similar footage of Biden and Young’s racist remarks, but found none.
I can resolve this fairly quickly for you and give strong E-V-I-D-E-N-C-E to support my point, if you will just answer the following question: How many children has Jesse Jackson fathered? (Note: You may research the question.) 8/19/2006 1:42:38 AM |

I've repeatedly objected to your lame comparison between Mel Gibson/Robert Byrd/Jesse Jackson. If you want to argue that the mainstream media has a liberal bias, do so--basing the premise of your argument on the media attention that Mel Gibson received is a terrible place to start, and that's what I've been trying to tell you.

I think he has six children, including one from an affair. There may be more that we don't know about.
