frankly im not sure who we'll count on this year...but im kinda excited to just see whoever we have out there just play and not give a shit about expectations because i think they'll be pretty low this year, and im not saying that because i dont think sidney will do anything, but first year under new coach...pretty good schedule...and not a lot of "star" returning talent...

I'm surprised that we don't have that typical out of conference game in the middle of our ACC schedule like we normally do (i.e. Seton Hall embarrassment last year).

OOC schedule looks pretty good IMO. I like the WVU game even though we'll probably lose.

i like them all except for michigan since we played them recently but cant do anything about that...the big 10 challenge is based on how the teams finish i believe so...but its better than its been for a long time...i just hope we can compete in some of these games...

i think when courtney fells gets a little gametime under his belt he'll be really good, based on what we saw of him last season. grant can be good in a real offense, as well, provided he doesn't turn out to be too much of an AI type.

The OOC looks significantly weaker then last years to me..

WVU is a bottom quarter team in the Big East this year, Bama is going to suck, Michigan should be decent, Cincy is likely a borderline NIT team..

There is a very real possibility we will face only ONE NCAA team OOC this year..

Bama is a top 10 team. Ronald Steele is probably 1st team all american and the best point guard in college basketball. They return their entire team from last year and have a solid freshman class. Glad you did your research.

Top 10? They lose Chuck Davis, add a decent class, and suddenly a team that snuck into the tournament last year becomes top 10?

There was an internet article posted recently saying TWC was close to deals with ESPN and they would have both ESPN2HD and ESPNU within 60 days. I have a feeling there is little truth to it, but FWIW.

Anyone notice that we only have ONE Sunday Night Hoops game? Most years all teams have multiple appearances...maybe its not that big a deal, but it is a national broadcast. Kinda surprised we were forgotten about like that, regardless of the outlook of our season.

N&O's take on the ACC basketball schedule:

http://www.newsobserver.com/752/story/476448.html

Quote :
"
New ACC schedules: the highs and Lowe
Intrigue builds, and N.C. State coach Sidney Lowe gets his itinerary, as the league releases its 2006-07 men's basketball schedules

An intriguing ACC basketball season beckons, with Sidney Lowe returning to N.C. State, Tyler Hansbrough back at North Carolina and 12 teams set for a season-long struggle that will lead, for the first time, to Florida. On Thursday, the ACC released its men's basketball schedules for the 2006-07 season. And in a twist that underscores the quirkiness of scheduling 12 teams, Duke and Wake Forest will play only once. That hasn't happened since 1921.
Duke will play North Carolina twice, of course. UNC, with sophomore center Hansbrough and a bevy of talented freshmen, could make a run at an ACC title, perhaps another NCAA title. Duke hopes to do the same.

In Raleigh, Lowe, a hero with the Pack's 1983 NCAA champs, has come back, promising a return to past glory. State opens with Wofford on Nov. 10 in the RBC Center and has an unusual schedule that includes consecutive games against East Carolina, UNC-Wilmington and UNC-Greensboro in addition to non-conference games with Alabama and Cincinnati.

The ACC season ends with a sharp reminder of the league's new dimensions. In March, the ACC Tournament will be at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Fla., the first time the tournament has been held south of Atlanta.

WILL HE PLAY?

Former high school phenom Greg Oden is expected be at the Smith Center with Ohio State for the ACC-Big Ten Challenge on Nov. 29. Question is: Will he play? The 7-foot center had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right wrist on June 16 and may not be in uniform until the start of the Big Ten season.

RED ALERT

Indiana at Duke, Nov. 28

Not to jinx Kelvin Sampson, but the first-year Indiana coach better shine up his suit of armor. After getting tagged for NCAA violations after leaving Oklahoma to coach the Hoosiers, you can bet the Cameron Crazies will have planned a little something to get under his skin.

TALK ABOUT YOUR TRAFFIC JAMS

Consider the following tight turnarounds for three basketball-hockey double bills at Raleigh's RBC Center.

Jan. 6: Boston College at N.C. State, 2 p.m.; N.Y. Islanders at Carolina Hurricanes, 7 p.m.

Jan. 20: Duke at NCSU, in a nationally televised game, 3:30 p.m.; Tampa Bay Lightning at Hurricanes, 8:30 p.m.

And Feb. 3, the real killer: North Carolina at NCSU, another nationally televised game, at 3:30 p.m. Then, at 8:30, the Boston Bruins visit the Canes.

They say it can be done. Stay tuned.

UNC AT DUKE, FEB. 7; DUKE AT UNC, MARCH 4

No word yet on whether ESPN will up the ante and devote 12 channels of round-the-clock coverage to broadcast the cleaning crews' efforts to get Cameron Indoor Stadium and the Smith Center ready for these two Games of the Century of the Week.

NEW ACC TRADITION: PASS THE SUNSCREEN

ACC Tournament fans will have to travel farther south than usual to watch the crowning of the league champion. Tampa, Fla.'s St. Pete Times Forum will host this season's four-day tournament, starting March 8.

With hopes of keeping their tournament stays from being brief, Wake Forest and Florida State worked in sneak-preview trips to the arena before conference play heats up. The Demon Deacons will play South Florida and the Seminoles will face Providence in a St. Pete Times Forum doubleheader Dec. 29.

MATT DOHERTY MEMORIAL GAME?

Think North Carolina would have invited Florida Atlantic to play at the Smith Center on Dec. 19 if Matt Doherty were still the coach at FAU? We don't, either. Rex Walters, who played for UNC coach Roy WIlliams at Kansas, is the Florida Atlantic coach now.

SURF'S UP

Georgia Tech will make its first trip to the Maui Invitational over the Thanksgiving weekend, earning coach Paul Hewitt the opportunity to wear a Hawaiian shirt on national television.

The Yellow Jackets, who finished 11-17 last season, will play Purdue in the first round Nov. 20 in a tournament also includes Oklahoma, Memphis, Kentucky and UCLA.

WELCOME HOME, TYLER

ACC Rookie of the Year Tyler Hansbrough chose not to turn pro after his freshman season at UNC because he wanted to improve his skills and win a national championship. But with a game scheduled for Dec. 22 at St. Louis -- just a two-hour drive from Poplar Bluff, Mo. -- perhaps he wanted to play in front of his hometown fans one more time as well.

SPEAKING OF GOING HOME

What's this, Sidney Lowe throwing Andrew Brackman a bone? The 6-foot-10 junior has hinted he may skip hoops this season and just pitch for the baseball team. Lowe, the Pack's new basketball coach, wants Brackman to play both sports. Bingo, the Pack schedules a game in Cincinnati, Brackman's hometown. Nice try, Sid.

NOT MUCH OF A CHALLENGE, HUH?

Challenge? What challenge? The ACC has beaten the Big Ten all seven times in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. This season, the leagues meet again in the ESPN extravaganza, with Wake Forest sitting out for the ACC in the 11-vs.-11 event.

Monday, Nov. 27

Michigan at N.C. State ESPN27

Tuesday, Nov. 28

Maryland at Illinois ESPN 7

Florida State at Wisconsin ESPN2 7:30

Penn State at Georgia Tech ESPNU 8

Indiana at Duke ESPN 9

Miami at Northwestern ESPN2 9:30

Wednesday, Nov. 29

Michigan State at Boston College ESPN 7

Iowa at Virginia Tech ESPNU 7

Virginia at Purdue ESPN2 7:30

Ohio State at North Carolina ESPN 9

Clemson at Minnesota ESPN2 9:30

PAST THE EXPIRATION DATE

Duke vs. Gonzaga, Dec. 21

The matchup could have caused aneurysms on both coasts had close friends Adam Morrison and J.J. Redick been suiting up for the Zags and Blue Devils. Both are in the NBA now. Hey, fellas, this one's a year late.

That game, by the way, is one of two Duke has scheduled for New York City's Madison Square Garden. The Devils also play St. John's in the Garden on Feb. 25.

WHIT'S WISH, KINDA

Fordham at Maryland, Dec. 6

Dereck Whittenburg badly wanted to coach in the ACC. And he will for one game when Whittenburg's team, Fordham, faces the Terrapins. Of course, he'd have preferred to be the coach at N.C. State, his alma mater. Right, Whit?

RIGHT OPPONENT, WRONG SPORT

Imagine if these were football games:

Clemson-Georgia

Maryland-Notre Dame

Miami-Nebraska

N.C. State-Alabama

Wake Forest-South Florida

^It's one of those schedules that looks good in terms of name recognition. Michigan and Cincinnati are known for their pasts in basketball, and 'bama and WVU are still fresh in people's minds from the last couple of seasons.

But yeah, all of them should be pretty weak this year...

I was reading that Hans-Douche has been working on a 15 foot jumper and has really been impressing all the coaches and players with his improvement over last year. That is seriously bad news for us - if he can reasonably step out and make a 10-15 foot shot, then he'll be at 25+ PPG assuming UNC still feeds him the ball everytime.
