My brother recently recieved a turbo form a friend at work for his 93 Subaru IMpreza Wagon...he's already got the cold air intake on it (wihc I make fun of him for already) and I was wondering out of curiosity and for the sake of my mother's car insurance, will this make any difference...it's just a turbo with a switch in the car's cabin...how much horse power will it add roughly and will he feel a difference? we don't need him thinking he's speed racer and shit...he already tells me every day about the Hondas he beats and the Kias and blah blah blah blah.... 8/22/2006 12:18:38 AM |

so, are you just going to weld the turbo onto the intake tube, because that will cause the higher density injectors and stock spark plugs to automatically tell the ECU to advance timing creating a lean condition that may cause severe piston ring damage. Is this switch a toggle or a flip switch, the flip switch turbos normally are higher quality and require fewer runners to the piggyback rom.
To answer your question, since the turbo is probably a TurbonetiX T-342 70trim it would add approx 20 hp, and you will notice a difference in the power at midrange RPMs thru out the whole RPM range.
[Edited on August 22, 2006 at 12:33 AM. Reason : the turbo should just bolt right onto the NA tubing BTW] 8/22/2006 12:29:32 AM |

yeah my bro's at a friend's house now installing it I believe...I might join his car club which is a joke because my 2.4 Liter Dodge Stratus could blow any of his members out of the water...hehe, it's just fun to pick at him and I wanted some ammo...I beleive it is a flip switch though...which would mean he's got a good quality one...if I get more info I'll post... 8/22/2006 12:39:04 AM |

i'll just summarize... you can't just buy a turbo. You need piping to make it work, enough fuel (pump/injectors/etc), and proper engine management so your car runs right. 8/22/2006 9:28:37 AM |

one kid in hs told me that when he got his civc he was gonna put a NOS boost in it. I asked him what else he was gonna upgrade to support that, and he said "nothin". I just laughed and then made fun of him, but he was dead serious. 8/22/2006 1:05:36 PM |

My Cummins has neither.
Most diesels don't need either. Yer petrol-burners, however...8/22/2006 11:33:31 PM |

you could hypothetically run without a wastegate (let's say you are maxing out a turbo with C16 in the tank and appropriate tuning) on a big turbo but not without a blow off valve, which prevents pressure from damaging the turbo itself 8/22/2006 11:54:29 PM |

bov is only for when you lift off the throttle
you dont need one unless you're a pussy. 8/23/2006 12:00:39 AM |

You don't need a blow off valve, the Lotus Esprit Turbo, SE, and S4 all came without one. Obviously not the best idea, but it can be done. 8/23/2006 12:19:07 AM |

well, i don't know about that. a bov releases boost pressure when the throttle plate closes preventing backflow of boost into the turbine which could cause premature wear and fin damage. a diesel doesn't need a bov since it lacks a throttle plate.
oh yeah, i forgot this thread isn't serious. duhhh.8/23/2006 12:35:39 PM |

if you dont lift, the throttle plate doesnt close..
but.. yeah... whatever, pussy
