Can find '04s for around $17-20k. Any of you high-rolling TWWers ever driven or ridden in one of these? They offer 2.5L and 3.0L models - not looking for power or performance really, but I just think it'd be pimp as hell to have a jaguar. Also, how long would an '04 X-Type (20k miles) be able to go before (serious) maintenance would be an issue?

Jag's are decent cars...just incredibly expensive to maintain.

You can pick up a decent S type for not much more then that. X Type is just too small.

The Jag X type is a Ford Contour underneath, so unless you like to pay $5-8K more for getting AWD and some leather trim then I'd say pass.

Well its not just some leather trim, its a whole different, much classier interior.

I agree with that, except they do not have to be incredibly expensive to maintain. You just need to find the right place to take them.

Look into a mid to late 90's XJ sedan if you are looking to get into "pimp" Jaguars.

^All the drivetrain and mechanical bits are Ford Contour/Mondeo. There is absoluetly nothing more complicated about maintianing an X-type than a regular ford, cept the AWD system.

Right, you hook up your generic Ford OBDII scantool up to any Jag and see how far you get.

Why don't you just get a BMW, or a Lexus or something? There are some nice Cadillacs too...

low mileage, preferable AWD, either fast or nice, < $20k...

Diamond Star Motors - dsm. Mitsubishi...

Eclipe awd turbo, and the eagle talons awd turbos. Fast and pretty cheap.

Looking at something in the 20's? I'd look at the Subaru WRX, and if ok with something a little older, the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4.

I can't believe you actually recommended someone spend their money on a 3000GT.

I'm debating if that was worse than the DSM remark.

if a two year old car now has only maintained less than half its original value

think about what its going to do while you own it... paying out the ass in depreciation

not to mention a lot of shops wont touch a jag

[Edited on August 23, 2006 at 11:29 AM. Reason : i think a lot should be one word]

Still looking hard at a 2004 X-Type. Only has 20.000 miles on it, and it's got 4 years on the bumper-to-bumper factory warranty left on it too. I'll probably only drive it 3000 miles a year, what do you guys think?

Sure, go for it.

If you like the car and it's got low miles and it's "cheap" considering, why not? All the folks on here will do it tell you it's a mechanical headache.

If it's on warranty for four years, and it's a car that's going to cost too much to maintain, I'd suggest selling it once the warranty is up and doing every single regular maintenance item listed in the manual (for fear of invoking the wrath of the gods if you miss something).

I suppose I should mention that I'm driving one of the ones on the left there...

Your mechanic is an idiot. The Jeep I6 has been in use for fucking ever and the newer Jag's are fords with a slightly prettier face (though same ugly interior).

i'd like to mention this though... the earlier 4.0 liter xjs with low mileage are bad investments...

they have a spray on bore liner and if they sit for a long period of time the vapors left in the cylinder begins to eat at the bore and eventually becomes a huge mess.. but if the car is a daily driver it rarely happens.

thats all i know about ford model jags.
