I bought some new tires at Costco last month and I noticed that I had green caps on the tires, and noticed on the service sticker they put on my windshield that they put nitrogen in the tires.

Is there really any advantage to doing this on a personal vehicle? I know they use it on the space shuttle tired, and remember hearing that they are used in racecars because nitrogen doesn't expand as much as "air" when heated, so it might be good for special purposes.

This article says it's good, but isn't the atmosphere 80% nitrogen anyways? (source)

Costco gives me free rotations, balances, and probably nitrogen fillups for the life of the tire, but I have heard that some places charge a premium for it ($5/tire).

Any thoughts?

Air is 78% nitrogen by default.

I think this is something to make customers feel special for buying tires from one place vs. the next.

Makes no difference in the real world though.

It's just that nitrogen is relatively inert, and won't cause premature oxidation or dry-rotting of the tire. It also won't support combustion of any sort in case your retarded ass uses an old can of Fix-A-Flat with isopropane as the propellant.

And it's usually dry. No water vapor or anything to rust your rim.

I can actually order the machines to do it.

As far as you know.

anyhow, the nitrogen advantages are neglegible. i like the theory, but its not going to revolutionize the industry or anything.

I believe the NASCAR pit crews use Nitrogen in their wheel guns. Not that it has anything to do with putting it in your tires. Damn

i like the idea of helium better than nitrogen. helium will cause your vehicle to weigh less leaving more usable horsepower and better mpg.

now.

youre fucking retarded

As for using nitrogen in the air guns, it's not convenience, it's necessity. Since nitrogen is denser than air, you get much more volume of gas going thru the gun when removing lug nuts. More gas means faster rotational rate. Faster rotational rate means nuts get loosened faster. Likewise with CO2.

^^^ You still haven't realized why CO2 isnt used to run air tools by anyone, or why it shouldn't be have you?

There is no need to worry about running air tools with CO2. Just maintain your air tools to the manufacturers’ recommendations with proper air tool oil and run your tools at the proper pressures. It's perfect for impact wrenches and nail guns. CO2 is even dry enough to push automotive paint out of a gun.

I would like to see what you have to say to that.

yeah dont use He in your tires

the molecules are small enough to pass through the rubber and youll end up with flat tires

the main advantage with nitrogen is it seaps out slower so your dont have to check the psi as often. still wouldnt pay extra for it

so... is there any possibility of a slow leak in a relatively well-sealed garage creating a hypoxygenated environment that could kill?

Indeed. It's actually ideal for a trail rig, 'cause if you break a bead, if you're fast enough, you can jump out and flick a match at the wheel and she'll blow right back onto the bead.

And the stuff coming out of my ass tonite seems to have a high methane content.

Must have been the 5 Cricket's hot dogs for lunch
