"AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - Police have detained 12 passengers from a Northwest Airlines flight to India that returned to Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on Wednesday, Dutch NOS television reported.

Northwest Flight NW0042 was escorted back by two F-16s after crew members reported several passengers were acting suspiciously, the Defense Ministry said earlier.

Several passengers on Northwest Airlines Flight NW0042 to Bombay were taken off the plane for questioning after it landed safely, airport spokeswoman Pamela Kuypers said. Others were questioned at the gate."

Just developing...any thoughts?

"An American passenger, who identified herself only as Alpa, told AP Television News that she saw about a dozen people taken off the aircraft in handcuffs who appeared to be of South Asian origin.

A U.S. government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, citing the sensitive nature of the subject, said that crew members and air marshals observed the passengers attempting to use cell phones and passing cell phones among themselves while the airliner was taking off.

"It was behavior that average passengers wouldn't do," the official said. "

Don't they tell you a couple times to cut off the cell phones during take off?

I guess it would look a bit suspicious, but I bet they just didn't bother to heed that advice.

so for these people, who are actually doing suspicious activity, they handcuff them and let them continue on their flight. but the man who was praying was removed from his flight. yep, that makes sense.

^^^I thought the praying guy's flight hadn't even taken off yet. Maybe I'm wrong. What would you want them to do? Just go ahead and put him on the plane in cuffs? This is a silly comparison if initial reports are true anyway. In this case they were already in the air and decided to turn the plane around and inconvenience all the passengers.

That was the classic "make a stupid comment before brainwork" post that some people around here are known for.

What did you think they did to the muslim...toss him out of the plane mid flight?
