whenever I play an audio file on my box it seems to grind through the song and playback is very distorted

sounds almost like thunder

any ideas of what is going on?

[longshot] If you have a creative soundcard make sure that in the creative software you don't have any audio filters applied. Sounds like you MIGHT be listening to everything with a "Rock Quarry" filter applied. [/longshot]

the problem was fixed momentarily

I'm also having trouble with video playback in Winamp

it seems to be as slow and jerky as the audio

MIGHT THIS be a problem with my Northbridge overheating?

Your northbridge overheating will lead to system wide instability problems, not just A/V problems.

if playback is distorted, you might have clipping problems, turn the sound down on the soundcard and up on your speakers.
