Spybot & adaware scans fit the bill. I figure you've at least already got antivirus software.

Oh, and if you've got an IBM thinkpad, run msconfig from start -> run and click on startup. Disable as much of that crap as you can that doesn't say virus scan or hard drive protect or what have you.

The T60's aren't as bad. The new thinkvantage 3 stuff is a little leaner and most of it is fairly useful. The t40 series stuff came with gobs of WTF.

AIM Triton and iTunes are the most likely culprits. MS Office or OpenOffice Quickstart icons could be slowing down your boot time a little too (openoffice much more so.)

1) If you don't have anything important on there, format the hard drive and reinstall Windows XP.
2) Download Windows Updates and Symantec Anvirius on a non-public network (i.e. NOT ncsu)
3) Get more than 256MB of RAM.
4) Install whatever additional programs you need.
5) Install anti-spyware programs.
