I'm a manager at the North Hills Stadium 14, and we are in need of employees who aren't in high school (b/c they can't work past 11). The pay kind of sucks ($6.25/hour for floor staff), but you'd get to watch movies for free, even if you only work once or twice a week. If anyone is interested, swing by the box office and fill out an application.

Also, I'm not sure if we're looking for more managers, but you can bring us a resume if you are interested in a manager/projectionist position.

Projectionists (and managers, since in Regal-land they are the same) start at $7.50, I believe.

how do you learn how to be a projectionist, will you train someone, or do you have to get somesort of certification?

We train and certify, but without any projection experience, you would have to be hired as a manager to do so.

i've yet to hit up the 1.50 theater in my 3+ years in raleigh

some of you still don't know how theaters work?
(ohh, that's right, not everyone has worked in a theater all their life)

about 90-80% of ticket sales go to film studios (not the movie theater)
that percentage gets lower every week or so the film plays (so for example, if harry potter is in its 4th week, theaters might be getting closer to 65-75% of grosses then)

that's why concession prices are so high
that money pays for basically everything.


and as far as pay goes, well... I don't know about all theaters, but the company I work for pays a bit more than that.

I worked at a movie theatre for 3 years and never received a raise (they paid me 5.15/hr) so $6.25/hr sounds good. Question though, are you hiring for box office, concession, door, or all? Also, what is your management criteria b/c I would definitely be interested. BTW, how long will you be hiring for and what is the start date?

Most of our floor staff work all positions (box/concession/door/usher). Very few work the same position all the time, unless they're just really really good at something.

I'm not entirely sure what my GM is looking for in a manager, but if you've worked at a theater for several years, you probably have a good shot.

For floor staff, we are hiring until we have enough staff (with our turnover rate, that's pretty much constantly), and start date would be as soon as we can get paperwork completed. For manager positions it will take a while longer because the process is more complex.

ups drivers make like 50k a year. temporary helpers make 10.50. part time regulars get 2k scholarships and 8.50. all with benefits 401 k med den 9 yards. talk about a generous company

they also work 10hr shifts in blistering hot wearhouses loading, unloading and sorting heavy boxes. you have to work for a couple years before you can ever be considered for a driver position. i never worked there but i did apply once.

It just seems that we seem to get a lot of very immature high schoolers working for us who do not like to follow even the most basic rules (ie: dress code, and the whole showing up to work when you are scheduled thing), and are basically just lazy. They don't tend to last very long. Most college students we've hired stick around for a while, and some who went away to school are even planning on coming back when they are on break.

We are trying to hire better employees so our turnover improves.

Pretty much any business that relies upon HS and College aged people to fill their needs is going to have a high turnover. Just from my personal experience, I've experienced it at pools, in retail, and in the restaurant business. That's just the way that business runs... so admitting to that isn't a bad thing. I can't imagine working for $6.25 while in college, but I guess some people don't really have any job experience or the want to work really hard? Who knows. Good luck finding people for your positions.

When you pay cloes to minimum wage (especially in a city), what the hell do you expect?

If the employees were any good, they would go somewhere that paid decently. Hell, even Walmart pays more than that.

Pay $10 an hour & then you might get pretty good employees.

Actually more like 4-5 hour shifts, I rarely work much over 20 hours. Also to get a part time driving job isnt that tough anymore because no one knows how to drive these days. YOu have to have a clean record to get a driving job and most people dont so I have been seeing people start part time driving after 6 months if that something you are into.

Ah, seems things have changed since I inquired about a job there. Good to hear its not as bad anymore. I like to think happy well paid un-overworked employees handle my packages :-)

Yeah, I know what you mean, but honestly, it all comes down to the interview process. how serious you make the position seems and how serious you are about the job, and the quality of employees you hire.

The theater I manage has an awesome turn over rate, most of our employees stay on for years until they graduate highschool (and come back during school breaks) or until they are just ready for something better for themselves. I'm generally happy with our staff.
From what I hear (from some employees who have worked for regal) the north hills theater you work for is run really strict, so i think the seriousness issue isnt a problem, maybe you guys just need more employee incentives (to work with the pay rate) and be more selective when hiring people.

I'd totally work at the galaxy a couple of times a week just for free movies there.

if it weren't for that whole conflict of interest thing

on a related note, for a 6 month period I worked at both Carmike and General Cinemas.

Carmike was the worst company to work for every...

General Cinemas was great to work for, too bad they closed

Carmike is indeed the shittiest company EVER. superduchess... my friend/new roommate is moving to raleigh he's got 6 years as a projectionist and the last 2 as a manager at carmike... hire his ass so he can pay rent

Speaking of theater chains that don't exist anymore, I fucking miss Eastern Federal. Working for them was awesome, even if I was only a floor employee at the time.

From somebody who's worked a theatre for several years as a head grunt (aka supervisor/team leader), here are some things to keep in mind:
-Movie theatres are in the business of selling popcorn and concessions, not movie tickets.
-If you want to know why movie tickets are expensive, talk to the studios, and then take a closer look at how many new theatres have gone up in the last 10-15 years.
-$6.00-$7.00/hr is the most you'll be paid as an employee. $7.00-$8.00 as a head grunt. And from there it varies for hourly managers ... no more than $12.00/hr from what I remember.
-For high school students, 5-10 hours a week at an easy job is excellent for spending money. While in high school, I worked Friday from 2pm-2am and earned $50/week for one night worth of work ... not bad.
-College students are more dependable because they NEED the money, versus high school students (typically) only wanting the money.
-Turnover rate is high and a well-known fact. I think I remember maybe 5-10% of staff stay for more than a year.

I could elaborate more, but I'll stop there. A freshman interested in movies and a career in management could have some prospects by taking a job here and working their way up.

A movie theater makes $.07 per ticket that they sell on average.
The cup that you drink from cost $.02 on average.

there used to be a general cinemas at pleasent valley (off of glenwood ave) behind the best buy, that's the 2nd of 3 theaters i worked at. I believe it is now a gold's gym after two other companies tried reopening it as an arthouse and second run theater
