So, lately we have had an issue at my appt. with little gnats flying all over, started off with just a few, but lately its gotten horrible. we keep the apt clean, etc however they seem to be multiplying fast as hell -- anyone know of any good ways to get rid of them?

pour beer onto a plate watch your gnats drown
but you really need to find the source and get rid of it 8/28/2006 8:10:41 PM |

u might want to find a source for the infestation, could potentially be some kind of rot or maybe some piece of fruit or food that has fallen somewhere out of reach, or maybe even somethign outside near an entryway to your home 8/28/2006 8:10:44 PM |

Yeah, it sounds more like fruit flies or grain moths. There's no hope until you find the source. 8/28/2006 8:12:28 PM |

i think people call them all "gnats" anyway

I'd recommend getting a can of flying insect killer. Get something water-based and preferably scented so your apartment doesn't smell like death (this way it smells like death and flowers). Check your plants' pots for gnats/maggots and spray them, remove any dead plant matter from the pot itself. Pour a little bleach down each drain in your place and run water real good through it afterward to prevent any serious corrosion.
Also, kill them as you find them. Great fun can be had in mashing gnats with your hands. 8/29/2006 12:16:50 AM |

Any and all water must not be in the open and available for consumption. 8/29/2006 7:27:05 PM |

yea potted plants commonly have gnats in the soil as im sure you have noticed (unless you are keeping poor soil)
it shouldnt be an overbearing infestation though, maybe replace the soil or remove as much litter as possible 8/29/2006 7:34:16 PM |

yeah, I've heard people say freeze potting soil (then thaw before planting, duh) before using it - same with bird seeds. I've had these meal moths .... took me two freakin months to find the source: a bag of brown rice that had gotten tossed out of sight. It was quite gross. 8/29/2006 9:06:58 PM |
