So last week, damn thing was scratchin away (sounds) at my ceiling. My room is an addition to the house, so I don't have access to the attic, other than a man made hole in my closet. I toss rat poison up there, and the sounds go away for about a week.
im thinking "hell yeah, he's gone now". But tonight what do ya know. Son of a bitch has returned with a vengeance. And he seem to be back scratching back at the same spot
like what do I do now? If it was more than one, and the first poisioning killed some of his pals, then he won't eat the poison. That is, if it's a rat. Do squirells keep up such noise at night??

use something that traps the critter so you can pull him out when dead instead of letting him rot where he falls 8/29/2006 6:24:11 AM |

If its your attic, I would guess it is a squirrel. One of those damn things dug two holes in our drywall. If it isn't actually clawing through the drywall it could also be a bird flying around. 8/29/2006 9:39:08 AM |

You need to get that poison that makes the rat thirsty and does not work undilt it drinks water. That way it goes outside drinks water there and dies there. If that thing dies in your attic its gonna smelll disgusting in your house. 8/29/2006 9:39:34 AM |

I agree, I had the same problem with squirrells Call 1-888-488-1415, they will trap and set the critters free somewhere safe (if they can) and far away from your attic

You don't need someone else to set up a squirrel trap. Just go ditch them in a park or on NCSU campus with the other crazy squirrels. 8/29/2006 11:26:52 AM |

Look around your house's foundation, roofing, and siding to see if there are any holes. A rat could have climbed up inside the walling if it got into the basement/foundation area. 8/29/2006 3:19:43 PM |

Dude, I was straight freakin out last night!!! theres nothing worse than thinking you're gonna wake up to the likings of a rodent sitting on your face!

Could be a squirell. I was thinking rat due to the time of its activity. I think squirells sleep at night, unlike their nocturnal cousins.

then Im stuck with an 8 ft exit hole in my roof, with hurrincane like rains around the corner. Now im a huge fan of killing a gnat with a sledge hammer...but damn. Im just gonna give it another night with the poison (again) then see whats up tomorrow. I was totally freaking out last night when i created this thread.8/29/2006 8:35:11 PM |

I also don't want him reproducing up there. Or free falling down on me while I get my beauty rest. The poison will deteriorate his ass so that he won't stink.8/29/2006 10:53:25 PM |

If it's just a little scratching it's probably mice. Also depends on if you've heard movement like walking around, and how loud that is. Like someone said, check the foundation vents for holes. Mice only need 1/4" and rats can get through 1/2-3/4". Try the poisoned seed packets you can get at Lowe's, and be aware it can take a month or more. You'll never get completely rid of mice - you just happen to finally be aware they're there.
If you're really concerned, check with your landlord about getting a pest control service out there.
If it was a squirrel you'd likely be saying that you hear a raccoon or something larger than a squirrel walking around up there, just b/c of the sound. I work in this exact field and that's what I've learned. 8/30/2006 9:01:36 AM |

I'd just try a simple old-school mouse trap with peanut butter as bait. I have had the exact same problem, and that catches any mice within a couple of days. You can get traps at Burke Brothers for less than $1. 8/30/2006 10:28:44 AM |

When i was in college, my last year and a half i lived in a old ass house near campus, with 7 others. We had mice that would just come under the door. One roommate was scared of them and all of a sudden one time he was like yelling and on top of his bed cause a mouse showed up...he searched for it couldnt find it, then set a mouse trap....a couple hrs after that we heard a "bang" and the mouse was caught in his room....it was pretty funny how he reacted to a damn mouse in his room. 8/30/2006 7:44:18 PM |
