I always thought that they were overrated.
But then it became cool to cite Brian Wilson as one of your musical influences. 9/4/2006 2:36:54 PM |

overrated? are you kidding me?
pet sounds is one of the most important albums in music history.
although it hurts to see brian wilson in his present state (last year around christmas time he had a life performance that was just dreadful) 9/4/2006 3:03:48 PM |

well it wasn't so much the age that looked to be the factor, but the anxiety he exhibited through the song. he looked miserable and nervous up there. 9/4/2006 3:19:02 PM |

^not at all. it's just a really great album (the greatest, in my opinion) and i could never find a copy on vinyl and here it is...new. it doesn't matter who it influenced and who thinks what. it is what it is. 9/4/2006 5:17:10 PM |

i found a copy on vinyl at american way one time. unfortunately it was nearly broken in half because the HORRIBLE scratches. i went from being horribly excited by a great find to dejected in about ten seconds. 9/4/2006 7:04:48 PM |

This would be exciting if I had one of those, you know... uh... oh, right, record players.
I suppose I could use it as a place mat, but that'd be extremely rude for such a great album.

^^ He was only in the touring group. My favorite non-traditional Beach Boy is Blondie Chaplin, who did the lead vocal on "Sail On, Sailor" and "Funky Pretty." 9/5/2006 10:41:08 AM |

my stereo disc has a little background fuzz. is that from being reprocessed for stereo? and yeah, the mono mix has more "boom" but i like the separation of sound that the stereo mix offers. i think "you still believe in me" suffers most from the stereo mix, as the second bass and backing vocal are completely gone. whatever. 9/5/2006 3:11:11 PM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
I only have the mono mix on vinyl, but the stereo mix that was put on the original CD reissue is pristine, whereas the original recording still has tape hiss, talking in the background, etc.
My problem with the original stereo mix is that it has no warmth whatsoever. It's been sucked of its life. After the big kick drum on "Wouldn't it Be Nice," it's all downhill. With Brian being deaf in one ear, it's impossible for him to do any adequate stereo mixing, and I honestly feel like the decisions made during the stereo sessions, while being "approved" by Brian, don't really reflect the ideal state of the music in a non-mono mix. 9/5/2006 3:19:57 PM |

Frosh is right to a certain extent. When I get an itch to listen to Pet Sounds, I listen to it all the way through three or four times, pick out the brilliant little things I often forget about, then put it back in the crate for a few months. It's not the kind of thing I want to hear every day, though that might just be because of the emotions it stirs up. 9/6/2006 12:57:37 AM |
