Ok, so I got rust on my vg10 steel knife, I don't know where it came from, but it's glued on there, like it came from somewhere else, maybe a sharpener, anyone have any experience removing rust chunks and can fill me in on some good tips 9/4/2006 4:34:42 PM |

Stainless just means it stains less. It doesn't mean that the steel is rust proof. I'd start by soaking it in WD-40 for a while and see what happens. Ask over at http://www.knifeforums.com and see what they say about it. 9/4/2006 7:44:31 PM |

also don't use lemon or other citrus-based detergents; clean as soon as possible after using, and don't let stainless soak overnight 9/5/2006 9:31:23 PM |

if you used the sharpener to sharpen a steel blade, then you have steel particles in the stone. These got picked up in the matrix of the stainless blade, and now you have some steel (which is rusting) in your stainless blade. If you can seperate the blade from the knife you can send it out to have it passivated, and that might remove the steel. Anytime you cut or machine stainless you have to use a new tool, or have the piece passivated immediately after maching. else it rusts. 9/6/2006 7:09:13 AM |

It looks like bits of rust, but they're not formed from the blade itself, it looks like it formed on the blade. 9/6/2006 5:35:21 PM |

there are actually several levels of "stainless" (I'm thinking like 7 or 8) but only about 3 are truly stainless. At least thats how it works with other hardware (nuts/bolts, etc) 9/6/2006 6:29:31 PM |

its friggin steel particles embedded in the stainless blade. either sand the surface till you get rid of it, or buy a new knife. If you decide to sand it, make sure you use garnet or some other type of sandpaper without aluminum oxide or other metals in it. actually, polish it with steel wool, that should make it shiny till it gets wet again anyway. 9/6/2006 7:27:47 PM |

How would an aluminum oxide sharpener result in that rust? 9/6/2006 10:24:46 PM |

I wouldn't worry about it. just use it. I've got a little rust on my elishewitz (vg10) but its a user, not sitting in a case somewhere. 9/7/2006 9:13:45 AM |
